It was a highly touted quarterback class in which he was included. He was considered the cream of the quarterback crop in the 2021 NFL Draft. Even being called a “generational talent” by some. So now with a new extension, Jacksonville Jaguars’ Trevor Lawrence joins the $50 million club. According to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, Lawrence agreed to a five-year $275 million contract extension with the Jaguars. It includes $200 million in guaranteed money and $142 million fully guaranteed at signing.

That works out to $55 million per year, the same as what Joe Burrows will earn. So Lawrence and Burrows are at the top of the $50 million quarterbacks club. The others include Detroit Lions’ Jared Goff ($53 million), Los Angeles Chargers’ Justin Herbert ($52.5 million), Baltimore Ravens’ Lamar Jackson ($52 million), and Philadelphia Eagles’ Jalen Hurts ($51 million). That is some pretty lofty company to be in.

But does his performance warrant the huge contract? Well his play has been inconsistent over the first three years of his career. His rookie season was rather disastrous thanks to the chaos created by former Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer. But he bounced back in his second year under the tutelage of head coach Doug Pederson. However, the improvement shown in 2022 was somewhat diminished in 2023. He stats were lower in total yards, passer rating, and touchdowns and the number of times he was sacked increased.

That isn’t to say that Lawrence can’t be great. Last season he dealt with multiple injuries but none caused him to miss any games until Week 17 when he suffered a shoulder A/C joint sprain. Sometimes having to play through so many minor injuries can disrupt a player’s ability to perform well.

Also the Jaguars lost Calvin Ridley to the Tennessee Titans so Lawrence will have to work with Gabriel Davis and Brian Thomas Jr. In any case, the 2024 season is going to be pivotal for the quarterback. He will need to step up his play to match the level of the other top paid quarterbacks. For instance Jared Goff, Jalen Hurts and Joe Burrows have made Super Bowl appearances.

But the Jaguars are happy with the deal per Jaguars General Manager Trent Baalke. “With his talent, work ethic, leadership, and competitive drive we are confident the best is yet to come and are thrilled that he and Marissa will continue to make Jacksonville their home.” And if he can stay healthy it would seem that things could get back on track for him. Nevertheless, with the new contract deal done, now he has to earn it.
