Like every other NFL team the Jacksonville Jaguars are busy trying to put together the best roster they can assemble. And that often involves removing players that no longer fit with the scheme. So with that in mind, the Jaguars have traded wide receiver Christian Kirk and released tight end Evan Engram. The moves are in line with what head coach Liam Coen spoke about at the NFL Combine last month.
“There are pieces in place, and there are some obvious places where we can improve and get better,” Coen said. “Ultimately, whether it’s through the free agency or in the draft, we know we have to fill some of those voids.”
Clearly Coen and general manager James Gladstone felt they could and should improve at the wide receiver and tight end position. Hence they traded Kirk to the Houston Texans for a 2026 seventh-round pick. Kirk arrived in Jacksonville in 2022, signing a four-year, $72 million deal with the Jaguars that was considered to be well beyond his expected market value. But things did go well for Kirk in his 2022 season with the Jaguars. His production was impressive as he garnered 84 passes for 1,108 yards and eight touchdowns.
In addition, he led the Jaguars in receiving and helping them to win the AFC South while also defeating the Chargers in the Wild Card Round. But the good times didn’t last for Kirk. In 2023 he caught 57 passes for 787 yards and three touchdowns in just 12 games. By 2024 he was relegated to a back seat in favor of rising rookie star Brian Thomas Jr. But that doesn’t mean that Kirk is done. He could be just what Houston quarterback C.J. Stroud needs. Stroud is likely to be without Stefon Diggs who is set for free agency and Tank Dell who’s on the long road to recovery.

However, the Jaguars didn’t stop with trading Kirk. They have also released tight end Evan Graham who joined the team in 2022. The 30 year old Engram had a Pro Bowl year in 2023 after catching 114 passes for 963 yards and four touchdowns. However, Engram suffered a torn labrum and missed nine games in 2024. That injury coupled with the regime change spelled the end for Engram’s time in Jacksonville. In addition, Engram will account for significant cap savings, $15.48 million, per Over the Cap. That is if he is designated as a post-June 1 release.
Besides Kirk and Engram the Jaguars also released wide receiver Devin Duvernay and cornerback Ronald Darby. So they have cleaned house, now it’s time to refill it.
