Jaelan Phillips Achilles Injury- Is the Turf to Blame?

Not again. Since week 1, it seems that player after player is going down for the rest of the season. The latest is Jaelan Phillips Achilles injury that occurred during the Miami Dolphins versus Jets Black Friday game.

The injury occurred in the fourth quarter, with Jaelan needing assistance to get off the field via cart. Albert Breer, Senior NFL reporter for NBC Boston says,

“[Unfortunate] to see Dolphins DE Jaelan Phillips carted off after a bad looking jiggle in his ankle/foot caused him to hit the deck. Another non-contact injury at MetLife (and after they replaced the turf in the offseason).”

Interesting. Nevertheless, Jaelan is keeping his head up about the unfortunate situation. Also, he is assuring fans that he plans to work extremely hard, in order to get back to swimming with the fishes. Regarding his injury and recovery, Phillips states,

“Absolutely devastated, but I feel strength in knowing that this is all a part of God’s plan, and that I have an incredible team and support system around me. I’ll be back stronger than ever. Fins up.”

Jaelan Phillips Achilles Injury- Is the Turf to Blame?

Dolphins running back Raheem Mostert has a theory to why there’s been an influx of Achilles injuries. Plus, he’s adamant that the NFL do something expeditiously about it.

Raheem says the NFL needs to change the turf at the Jets/Giants MetLife Stadium. Mostert says, “We’ve got to do something about this turf and this playing surface. It’s still a major problem. It just has to change.”

A guy whose job is to run on turf most likely would know whether it’s good or bad. The problem is… the owners themselves. They don’t see a problem.

In fact it seems as though NFL teams’ owners are against the idea of moving away from artificial turf. Why? Simple… due to cost. However, is a few extra dollars in savings worth losing your players?

For reference… Aaron Rodgers was also lost for the season during Week 1 while playing at MetLife. Therefore, this is not some sort of anomaly. It’s becoming a pattern.

Football is a business. Players are just apart of the product. While products don’t often get any say over how they are utilized or treated. Moving, breathing and thinking ones… always should.
