It’s Official Jason Kelce Announced His Retirement From the NFL

We had thought back in January that Jason Kelce was retiring. He had told his teammates as much in the locker room after their Wild Card Weekend loss. Now however, it’s official. Jason Kelce announced his retirement from the NFL. A moving video tribute has been posted on the Philadelphia Eagles website. An emotional Jason talks about what makes a person successful, the influence of his parents in his life, and how much he loved the opportunity to play for the Eagles.

In the tribute his philosophy on persistence was highlighted. It was a quote his grandfather gave him from Calvin Coolidge: “Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not. Nothing is more common than the unsuccessful man with talent. Genius will not. Unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not. The world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan “Press On” has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.” Having not received a scholarship to play at any division 1 university, his persistence is what propelled him. Now after a successful thirteen year career we can say his persistence paid off.

Today he held a press conference that was close to 42 minutes. As he sat down he immediately started to cry and had to work to get his emotions under control. Several deep breaths didn’t help as he tried to compose himself with tears running down his face. Eventually he was able to start describing his love of football; the challenges and the camaraderie of his teammates. And of course he thanked the many people who were a part of his life, family, friends, coaches, and teammates.

Kelce was the gold-standard of how the Center position should be played in football. Although he had been considered small coming out of college he played big. He was a fan favorite and well liked by all his teammates. In addition, he’s a family man being a husband and father, son, and brother. He did lots of work in the community bringing smiles to the faces of children and adults alike.

I don’t know what Kelce’s plans are for retirement but I hope he will get involved in broadcasting. Hearing him call NFL games or even offer analysis of games on one of the networks would be fantastic. Kelce reminds me of another former Eagle, coach Dick Vermeil. Both are likeable, emotional guys who you can’t help but to root for. I’m rooting for seeing more of Kelce after football.
