It’s Official DeAndre Hopkins Has Been Traded To Kansas City Chiefs

He was in his second year with the Tennessee Titans when the prolific wide receiver switched zip codes. It’s official, WR DeAndre Hopkins passed his physical and has been traded to the Kansas City Chiefs. The team officially welcomed Hopkins on their social media account today. In a corresponding move, the Chiefs have placed WR Skyy Moore on IR with a core muscle injury. Adam Schefter provided the terms of the deal:

Titans get a 2025 fifth-round pick that becomes a fourth-round pick if the Chiefs make the Super Bowl and Hopkins plays 60% of the snaps.

Chiefs get DeAndre Hopkins. Titans pay a little less than half of Hopkins’ remaining $8 million salary this season.

Since the Chiefs are undefeated right now the chance of them making the Super Bowl still looks good. And because they are down some of their offensive weapons, Hopkins has a good chance of playing 60% of the snaps. The question is how long will it take to get Hopkins up to speed. Apparently not long as he is expected to play this Sunday. Ian Rapoport posted on his social media account: Will new #Chiefs WR DeAndre Hopkins play this week? Coach Andy Reid: “Why wait, right?”

Hopkins entered the league when he was drafted by the Houston Texans with the 27th overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft. He was named to the NFL All-Rookie Team for the 2013 season despite being hampered by inconsistent quarterback play. For two seasons he and wide receiver Andre Johnson were a powerful 1-2 punch for the Texans. Johnson went to the Colts in 2015 and Hopkins became the No. 1 wide receiver. The Texans traded Hopkins and a fourth-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft to the Arizona Cardinals in March 2020.

In his first season with the Cardinals Hopkins went over 10,000 receiving yards for his career. He became the youngest player in NFL history to eclipse the mark. On May 26, 2023, Hopkins was released by the Cardinals and signed a two-year contract with the Titans on July 24, 2023. During his career he has produced a 1,000-yard season in seven of his 11 years including 2023. He is a three-time First-Team All-Pro selection. Hopkins is also a five-time Pro Bowl and All-Pro selection, earning First-Team honors in 2017, 2018 and 2019.

Although he is 32 and in his 12th season it appears Hopkins still has some gas in the tank. And he doesn’t have to worry about bad quarterback play with Patrick Mahomes under center. This trade looks good on paper but we’ll see if it translates to the field.
