It’s NFL Black Monday Official Start Of the NFL Coaching Carousel
It’s probably one of the most nerve-wracking days of the year. But it’s NFL Black Monday – the official start of the NFL Coaching Carousel. Any coaches who were on the hot seat will be told if they get to stay or have to go. Oftentimes if a head coach is fired, most if not all of his coaching staff is also let go. So far, the body count is low with two head coaches being fired. However, that’s probably because three other coaches were fired during the season.
Arthur Smith was given his walking papers last night by the Atlanta Falcons. He was with the team for three seasons and finished with an overall record of 21-30. The search for a new head coach will be led by owner Arthur Blank, and CEO Rich McKay. Others will also provide input including General Manager Terry Fontenot. There is no rush to fill the position as a timetable has not been set.
Below is a statement released by Arthur Blank:
“Decisions like this are never easy and they never feel good,” said Blank. “We have profound respect for Coach Smith and appreciate all the hard work and dedication he has put into the Falcons over the last three years.
He has been part of building a good culture in our football team, but the results on the field have not met our expectations. After significant thought and reflection, we have determined the best way forward for our team is new leadership in the head coaching position.”

Well respected Ron Rivera was terminated by the Washington Commanders after finishing the season 4-13. His overall record was 26-40-1. Below is the statement from the organization:
“I want to thank Ron and his wife Stephanie for all they did for the Commanders and DMV community, especially during the ownership transition,” **Commanders Managing Partner Josh Harris said in a statement.** “Ron helped navigate this organization through some challenging times. He is a good man and thoughtful leader who has positively contributed to this organization and the NFL. I wish the Rivera family nothing but the best moving forward.”
Other Teams With Interim Coaches
The word “fired” is no stranger to the NFL this season. Some teams perform well; others do not. And some NFL owners are not standing for mediocrity or poor performances from their respective franchises. Therefore, who else is in the midst of change?
The other three teams that currently have interim coaches are the Carolina Panthers who fired Frank Reich. Josh McDaniels was fired by the Las Vegas Raiders. And the Los Angeles Chargers who fired Brandon Staley. Both the Raiders and Chargers also fired their GM’s.
