Indianapolis Colts Sign Future Hall of Famer Philip Rivers to Practice Squad
This is seriously about to be must watch TV. When the Indianapolis QB Room took some injury hits, one man is putting on his cape and flying in to provide his support. It is confirmed that the Indianapolis Colts are signing future Hall of Famer Philip Rivers to their practice squad.
It has been a very interesting month, week and 48 hours for Philip. On December 8th he turned 44 years old. Then the following day on December 9th he makes a move to come out of retirement and signs with the Colts. Indianapolis was in need of some QB assistance after losing their starting quarterback, Daniel Jones for the rest of the season; and with their backup QB sustaining an injury as well.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapaport reported on the Rivers signing to the practice squad stating,
“He’s back: The Colts are signing QB Philip Rivers to their practice squad, per The Insiders.
The Hall of Fame semifinalist, age 44, rejoins the Indy QB room to support Riley Leonard and serve as a potential option down the road. A dramatic return.”

Dramatic indeed. Nonetheless, another compelling aspect of this story is that Rivers may be able to seamlessly integrate himself into the Colts offensive system. You see, when a new QB comes into the picture, usually it can take a moment for them to learn various on field strategies. Some click faster than others learning all the plays. However, it looks like Rivers is very familiar with Indianapolis’ ways.
Former NFL player JJ Watt spoke on this very subject. Regarding Rivers, Watt reveals,
“Fun Fact learned in production meetings:
Philip Rivers ran the same offense as the Colts for his son Gunnar’s HS team this season.
He and Shane Steichen spoke weekly about it, discussing plays and even film.
So familiarity with the scheme should be no problem whatsoever.”
Additionally, Steichen and Rivers go way back with each other. So then, they have most likely been talking ball with each other for years. Shane Steichen, was Rivers’ former quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator with the Chargers. And now they get to possibly join up yet again. This should be fun.
