Under new ownership with the daughters of Jim Irsay, the Colts have been making changes, particularly with Carlie Irsay being actively involved in the franchise. Last season they brought on board quarterback Daniel Jones. We thought Jones was not that great after his tenure with the New York Giants. However, he came in and turned heads having a much better season with the Colts. Now the Indianapolis Colts have made more moves signing basketball star Carson Towt and former Chicago Bears Jonathan Owens. They will be playing tight end and safety respectively.

What’s special about Towt is that he was an excellent basketball player at Notre Dame. On March 17, Towt signed his first-ever NFL contract without ever playing a snap of football. However, he is not the only player to do such a thing. In fact, he will be sharing the locker room with someone who has the same type of background. Eight-year veteran tight end Mo Alie-Cox also only played basketball and then joined the NFL. Alie-Cox just re-signed with the Colts on Monday and became the second-longest tenured member of the Colts roster.

Towt is 6’7″ and weighs 250 pounds and last season he played forward for Notre Dame. Prior to that he played basketball at Northern Arizona from 2019-25. While there, Towt set the Big Sky Conference single-season record with 423 total rebounds in the 2024-25 season (leading the country) and recorded 20 double-doubles. Towt never played football while in college or at high school. But he’s not worried about that as he said:

“We kind of knew the beginning of my basketball season that we were going to explore this,” Towt said Tuesday after signing with the Colts as an undrafted free agent tight end. “It’s been quite the journey and man, it’s just getting started. So I’m excited to see where we can all go.”

In addition to Towt, the Colts also signed Jonathan Owens, safety and husband to superstar gymnast Simone Biles. The seven-year veteran was an undrafted free agent for the Arizona Cardinals in 2018 but was waived. He spent the whole season on injured reserve and was signed to the Houston Texans practice squad in 2019. He spent four years there before moving on to the Chicago Bears in 2023. Owens was granted a leave of absence from training camp to support his wife at the 2024 Paris Olympics. After spending two seasons with the Bears, Owens has signed with the Colts.

Indianapolis has been busy in free agency like other teams. They have signed other defensive players besides Owens such as Arden Key Colby Wooden, Jerry Tillery, Micheal Clemons and two-time Super Bowl winner Derrick Nnadi.
