Indianapolis Colts Announced Daniel Jones Will Be Starting Quarterback

Yet another quarterback competition has come to a close. Daniel Jones and Anthony Richardson were dueling for the starting quarterback position. And today the decision was made as the Indianapolis Colts announced that Daniel Jones will be the starting quarterback. Jones was the No. 6 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft was released by the New York Giants last season. Later he joined the Minnesota Vikings’ practice squad down. Anthony Richardson was the the 2023 NFL Draft’s fourth-overall pick and the Colts’ starter the last two seasons.

Head coach Shane Steichen was looking for consistency and someone who could run the offensive operations. During an interview this past Saturday, he said:

“I think it’s everything, right?” Steichen said Saturday. “The operation, the communication in the huddle, the checks, getting guys on the same page. The consistency of all that, obviously, is going to play a big factor in this.”

“When they both came in, I made it very clear that this is going to be a battle, and they’re going to compete for the job,” Steichen said after Saturday’s preseason game against the Green Bay Packers. “And like I said, I’m going to make the decision I feel is best for the football team.”

Jones gave him what he was looking for and that played a part in the decision that was made. Furthermore, the Colts seem to be invested in Jones for the duration of the season. Steichen went on to say:

“He’s our starting quarterback for the season,” Steichen said. “I don’t want to have a quick leash on that. I feel confident in his abilities.”

After his own disappointing outing with the New York Giants, Jones felt he had an opportunity to compete for the starting position. And now his instincts have paid off. But he’s only signed to a one-year deal for $14 million. He’s going to have to play impressively this season if he wants to get an extension.

As for Richardson, he was definitely in the quarterback competition but was ultimately beat out by Jones. Coming out of college, he was considered a developmental project. And his development has not progressed enough to satisfy the Colts. And he has dealt with injuries such as surgery to repair his injured shoulder which ended his rookie season. Then he had an oblique injury last season that caused him to miss some games. That was followed by a brief benching in which he was replaced by Joe Flacco.

Now Richardson will head to the bench again and watch Jones lead the offense this season. Whether he’ll get another chance with the Colts or some other team remains to be seen. But for now, Indy is moving forward with Daniel Jones who will have a lot to prove in 2025.
