Indiana Will Hire West Virginia’s Darian DeVries as Next Head Coach
Someone please check on West Virginia. It has been quite a week for the university. First being snubbed when it comes to NCAA Tournament; and now a they are losing their high energy coach. Numerous sources are confirming that Indiana will hire West Virginia’s Darian DeVries as its next head coach.
So then, it is out with the old and in with the new. The DeVries era will now begin as he replaces Woodsen. Furthermore, longtime basketball analyst Jeff Goodman was in on this story from the very beginning. He reveals,
“BREAKING: Indiana will hire West Virginia’s Darian DeVries as its next head coach, replacing Mike Woodson. Darian DeVries, 49, played at Northern Iowa and was a long-time assistant at Creighton for Dana Altman and Greg McDermott. He took over at Drake in 2018, and led the Bulldogs to a 150-55 record and three NCAA tourney appearances in six seasons before being hired at West Virginia this past season.
Darian DeVries is also expected bring with him his son – Tucker who, when healthy, is one of the better players in the country. The 22-year-old forward shut it down after 8 games due to an ongoing shoulder issue. He was the two-time Missouri Valley POY and was averaging 14.9 points and 4.9 boards this season. He’s also a 37 percent career 3-point shooter.”
As one can see, it looks like when it comes to Indiana, DeVries and his son are a package deal. And West Virginia has NOW lost 3 things. The tournament, coach Darian and an athlete, Tucker DeVries.

Nevertheless, the question is will this prove be a good move for the Hoosiers? Well, Creighton head coach Greg McDermott weighed in; and believes DeVries is just what the doctor ordered for the basketball program at Indiana. McDermott is a voice of reason in this discussion since he spent plenty of time with DeVries when Darian worked his assistant. Therefore, Greg McDermott mentions,
“Drock is a grinder. His tireless work ethic and passion for bringing out the best in his players is unmatched. He is an outside of the box thinker on both ends of the floor. Indiana hit a home run.”
Quite the endorsement. Well, DeVries may not have been on the coaching wishlist of Indiana fans. However, Darian could prove to be a great hire for the university as he becomes the 31st head coach of Indiana Basketball.
