Indiana Pacers Traded With Memphis Grizzlies For Center Jay Huff

There has been a whole lot of action going on in the first week of the NBA free agency period. Last week Myles Turner opted for free agency and left his old team behind. He decided to join the Milwaukee Bucks leaving the old team without a center. Well no grass was grown as the Indiana Pacers quickly traded with the Memphis Grizzlies for center Jay Huff. Turner, who is 6’11” will now be replaced by the 7’1″ Huff.

Regarding the trade, Shams Charania posted the following:

“The Memphis Grizzlies are trading center Jay Huff to the Indiana Pacers for one second-round pick and one second-round pick swap, sources tell ESPN.”

“After departure of Myles Turner, Pacers trade for the 7-foot-1 Huff, who averaged 6.9 points, 2 rebounds and nearly 1 block in 11.7 minutes per night. He shot 41% from 3-point range last season, playing in 64 games after just a total of 31 contests in his first three seasons.”

Turner had wanted to stay with the Pacers but as usual disagreement about money came into play. Turner wanted $25 million per year, but Indiana wasn’t willing to pay anything beyond $22 million. Therefore, the Bucks swooped in with the big deal according to Pro Football Network. Turner got a four-year, $107 million deal worth $26.75 million annually. The Bucks got a two-time NBA blocks leader who averaged 15.6 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 1.5 assists in 30.2 minutes per game during the 2024-25 season.

Some Pacers’ fans are convinced that Huff is not on the same level as Turner. Whereas others feel just the opposite, believing that Huff will be a quality addition to the team because of his valuable rim protection. Huff also shot 40.5% from three-point range during the 2024-25 season, compared to Turner’s 35.8%. And it’s thought that Huff’s skills will mesh well with Tyrese Haliburton’s playmaking abilities.

So after replacing the departed Myles Turner with Jay Huff the Indiana Pacers were very proactive with filling a need. However, the Memphis Grizzlies also wasted no time in filling their vacant position. As reported by Shams Charania of ESPN, “free agent center Jock Landale has agreed to a deal with the Grizzlies, sources said. Landale solidifies the Grizzlies’ frontcourt after the trade of Huff as the team and his agent, Sammy Wloszczowski of SIG Sports, reach terms.” The Australian 6’11 center is 29 y/o. Off the bench, he averaged 11.9 MPG, 4.8 PTS, 3.3 TREB, and 0.9 AST.

So there has been a flurry of activity surrounding centers in the past few days and no doubt there will be more to come. But for now we say congratulations to Jay Huff and Jock Landale on their new deals.
