She stood on business. She stood her ground. However, now she is seriously doing business and breaking ground with a new level of popularity. With a rise in social media presence and skyrocketing sales; Cunningham is carving out a spot in the W as one of the league’s leading faces. Since Wednesday, Indiana Fever’s Sophie Cunningham sold out her jersey despite receiving a league fine of $400. Nevertheless, what brought on the fine and this surge of fan purchase power?

Just days ago, the Indiana Fever and Connecticut Sun faced off in one of the most talked about matchups of the season thus far. Both teams fought for the win; but also majorly stepped up the physicality towards each other. Caitlin Clark and Jacy Sheldon both ended up on the ground during the third and fourth quarters. With several mini spats popping up along the way.

Several techs and an ejection later, the game finally concluded. The Fever won 71-88, but the beef was strong between these two franchises. A rivalry deepening.

Furthermore, this latest WWE-style game wasn’t the first incident between the Sun and Fever. The Fever and Sun had already played once this season, and that matchup included Fever guard Sophie Cunningham getting her front tooth chipped and injuring her ankle on a hard screen.

However, Indiana Fever head coach, Stephanie White felt like things escalated due to in-game situations not being properly handled or addressed by the refs. White states,

“I think it was pretty obvious that stuff was brewing, right?” White said postgame. “When the officials don’t get control of the ballgame, when they allow that stuff to happen, and it’s been happening all season long … you’ve got competitive women who are the best in the world at what they do, and when you allow them to play physical, and you allow these things to happen, they’re going to compete, and they’re going to have their teammates backs. It’s exactly what you expect out of fierce competition. I started talking to the officials in the first quarter, and we knew this was going to happen. You could tell it was going to happen. So they got to get control of it. They got to be better.”

Cunningham agrees with White’s assessment. Sophie adds,

“I think the refs had a lot to do with that. It was a build up for a couple years now of them just not, not protecting the star player in the WNBA. And so at the end of the day, I’m going to protect my teammates, that’s what I do.”

After the league processed the events of Fever versus Sun. It was decided that Cunningham would be fined $400. However, Sophie is not asking anyone to cry her a river about it. The Fever game went viral and Sophie made new fans. As 93.5 The Fan confirms,

“With Cunningham stepping up for Clark during a physical matchup, her jersey sales skyrocketed, selling out within hours. The pivotal moment came after the Sun’s Jacy Sheldon fouled Clark, escalating tension throughout the game.
