Indiana Fever Announce Sophie Cunningham Will Miss Rest of Season Due to Torn MCL

More injuries continue to plague Indiana this season. For instance, the team’s star player has already been sidelined without a date of return. And now it looks as though another popular member has played their last game of this year as well (including the upcoming playoffs). On Tuesday, the Indiana Fever announced that Sophie Cunningham will miss the rest of the season due to a torn MCL injury. The injury occurred during a game at Connecticut on Sunday.

Via their website the Fever released the following statement regarding Cunningham:

“The Indiana Fever announced today that guard Sophie Cunningham will miss the remainder of the 2025 WNBA season after suffering an injury during the team’s game at the Connecticut Sun on Sunday afternoon. Cunningham sustained a season-ending injury in her right knee during the second quarter of the game and is expected to make a full recovery.

In a corresponding move, the Fever have signed guard Shey Peddy to a seven-day hardship contract and released guard Kyra Lambert.

Peddy, a six-year WNBA veteran, most recently appeared with the LA Sparks averaging 5.0 points and 2.7 assists over six games on a hardship contract. Prior to her time in Los Angeles, Peddy split her career with the Phoenix Mercury and Washington Mystics, starting her WNBA career in 2019.”

In Sunday’s thriller matchup against the Sun. The Fever overcame a 21-point deficit to defeat Connecticut in overtime; winning 99-93. It was quite a battle between the two franchises.

Nonetheless, the incident involving Cunningham happened early in the second quarter when Sun guard Bria Hartley fell into Cunningham’s right knee while trying to drive the basket. Cunningham grabbed her right leg and hopped to the baseline, then fell to the floor, grabbing her knee and yelling in pain. She would eventually be helped to the locker room and assessed.

Besides Caitlin Clark and Sophie, the Fever have also lost guards Sydney Colson (left ACL tear) and Aari McDonald (broken right foot) to season-ending injuries in the Fever’s 107-101 win against the Phoenix Mercury (July 30), further depleting the team’s backcourt. However, despite all of this adversity; the team still remains firmly in the hunt for a spot in the playoffs. Continuing to valiantly fight on for Indy fans.

The Fever will next play juggernaut, the Minnesota Lynx. A team with 28 wins and only five losses. Indiana is only eligible for two hardship contracts right now, as Cunningham needs to miss a game before the Fever become eligible for a third. Once Cunningham misses Friday’s game vs. the Minnesota Lynx, a corresponding roster move can be made.
