In Another Comeback Carlos Alcaraz Outlasted Jannik Sinner In Men’s French Open

After all the drama that took place surrounding the women’s French Open final, the men decided to stage their own grand finale. It looked as if the Italian was in total control of the match when he took a 2-0 lead into the third set. However, the Spaniard said not so fast, I’m not done yet! So in yet another comeback Carlos Alcaraz outlasted Jannik Sinner in the 2025 Men’s French Open final. With Alcaraz being the defending French Open champion he was not going to go quietly into the night. He ensured that by winning the third set the epic battle was on.

After fending off three championship points in the fourth set he forced a fifth set which would land their match in the Roland Garros record books. It was the longest-ever French Open final — 5 hours, 29 minutes — in the Open Era. It was so tight that Sinner won 193 points, Alcaraz 192. And for Alcaraz this was his second straight French Open title with a comeback, after trailing 2-1 in sets to Alexander Zverev in last year’s final. And a third major title from behind, following his five-set win against Novak Djokovic in the 2023 Wimbledon final.

When Alcaraz defeated Alexander Zverev their match nearly set the record with a game time of 4 hours and 12 minutes. Alcaraz commented on his amazing comeback in the final:

“When the situations are against you, then you have to keep fighting. It’s a Grand Slam final, it’s no time to be tired, no time to give up,” Alcaraz said. “Do I enjoy that? The real champions are made in those situations. Today it was all about the belief in myself.”

But for Sinner the loss was a tough pill to swallow as it was the first time that he had lost a Grand Slam final. But it was the fifth time in succession he has now lost to Alcaraz, who clinched the 20th title of his career at the age of 22.

Jannik Sinner was targeting a third Grand Slam title in a row, knowing he had won his past 20 matches at major level. Nevertheless he displayed good sportsmanship when he told Alcaraz:

“I’m very happy for you, and you deserve it, so congrats,” the 23-year-old Sinner told Alcaraz. ”It’s an amazing trophy, so I won’t sleep tonight very well, but it’s okay.”

Just like the women’s final this was a battle between the No. 1 (Sinner) and No. 2 ranked (Alcaraz) men’s tennis players in the world. And they did not disappoint with their protracted battle for the ages. We obviously have not seen the last of them so we can expect the drama to ratchet up even higher when next they meet. But until that time, we extend a hearty congratulations to Carlos Alcaraz on his 2025 French Open victory!
