Did you know that 63% of people who have children under 18 report that their child plays sports? But why is that the case? Many believe that youth sports help children to develop self-confidence, learn new skills and build confidence. These are the things parents desire for their children to have so that they can use them in their everyday lives. According to Civic Science, regarding youth sports there are three quick participation data points involved:
- Multi-sports athletes: Most parents with children under 18 playing in an organized sports league say their child is playing in at least two different sports (65%). Thirty percent of them say their child is playing in organized leagues in three or more different sports.
- Top seasons for sports: Fall is the most common season for youth sports participation (58% say their children under 18 play in the fall), followed by summer (51%), winter (48%), and spring (44%).
- Most common sports: Basketball, football, baseball/softball, and soccer are the most commonly played sports.

It’s often been said that a parent can spend a great deal of their non-working hours ferrying their children from one sport to another. Involvement in youth sports is important but you need to beware of a certain pitfall. Youth sports are a booming business so they have attracted the attention of private equity groups. Luke Goldstein of The Lever wrote about private equity firms involved in youth hockey facilities. He said, “So what I kind of found from my reporting is that this is not just happening in youth hockey. This is really across the board for youth sports in general, which has become a booming industry. It generates about $40 billion…”
These firms are pricing many youths out of sports. The exorbitant fees being charged are problematic. So if you want to get your children involved in youth sports you need to investigate if the clubs or teams they join are owned by private equity firms. But if you get your children into non-pension equity teams they could excel in sports and life!
