How Much Do NFL Kickers Make?

It seems like NFL kickers don’t always get a lot of respect. Yet they are an important part of the team. So it may lead some people to wonder how much do NFL kickers make? Given that they are part of a team, they are contracted like every other player on the roster.

Some people feel like kickers are practically on the same level as the team mascot or cheerleaders. The mascots and cheerleaders are hardworking and deserve every penny they earn. However, they aren’t on the team roster. They are not contracted like the players on the roster. And they definitely don’t play in the game. So these two groups are not at all on the same level.

Like every other position on the team, the dollar amount of a kicker’s contract varies. In 2022, the average kicker earned about $2.5 million for the season. You might think that’s a lot of money just to kick a ball. But don’t forget they have to pay taxes, union dues, agent’s fees, etc. They are lucky if they bring home half of the $2.5 million. And that’s if they are fortunate enough to make the average salary. Some earn much less than that.

Also, kickers are part of the special teams unit. So they are doing much more thank kicking field goals and extra points. On kickoffs, they have to kick the ball and run at top speed up the field. They are usually the last line of defense against the opposing team. If his teammates aren’t successful in stopping the kickoff returner, he may be the last guy available to make the tackle. That’s no easy task but it could be the difference between a win or a loss.
