How Long Has Lebron Been In The NBA?

There are now some people who can legally drink; who were born when King James got his start in the league. Therefore, how long has Lebron been in the NBA? Well, if our hint didn’t help, here’s the answer… Lebron James has played 21 seasons in the NBA so far (as of 2024.

21 seasons is a long time.  Lebron has been in the NBA so long that all you have to do is refer to him as “Lebron” and everyone knows you’re talking about Lebron James.

He started his career in the 2003-2004 season with the Cleveland Cavaliers at just 18 years old after being selected as the first overall pick in the 2003 NBA draft.

His career accomplishments include:

  • 4 NBA championships,
  • 4 NBA Finals MVP’s,
  • 4 time NBA MVP and he has been named an All-Star for 20 seasons, among numerous other accolades.

Many NBA fans continue to endlessly debate between Lebron James and Michael Jordan for the title of “GOAT”, or greatest of all time NBA player.  Whoever you think is the greatest NBA player of all time; you could make a strong argument that no NBA player has excelled as much as Lebron James has; for as long as he has. His longevity is truly something to behold. And from an athletic standpoint is astonishing.

How Long Has Lebron Been In The NBA?

Every player retires eventually. Father Time catches up. MJ, Kobe, Magic, Shaq and Bird all said goodbye because they were ready to move on. Especially, due to the harsh physical toll sports can have on the body. So then, how much longer will Lebron play?

Lebron has talked about his desire to still be playing when his oldest son “Bronny” could be coming into the league, and potentially even his son Bryce.  He told Sports Illustrated in 2022:

“I like to throw things out in the airwaves, but I’m not one to [say] what’s going to happen in the next two to three years, I am a visionary, but I’m also a guy that lives in the moment. I’d definitely be looking at who got first-round picks in 2024, 2025, things of that nature; 2026, ’27. I pay attention to that type of stuff. I feel like I could play for quite a while. So it’s all up to the body, but more importantly, my mind, If my mind can stay sharp and fresh and motivated, then the sky’s not even the limit for me. I can go beyond that. But we shall see.”

How long does Lebron plan to keep playing?  Jovan Buha posted a video on X on March 31, 2024 where Lebron answered that question:

“Not very long. … I’m not gonna play another 21 years, that’s for damn sure. But not very long. I don’t know when that door will close as far as when I’ll retire. But I don’t have much time left.”

Nevertheless, Lebron’s body and mind are holding up just fine so far. In his 21st season he continues to work on his game and is shooting at a higher percentage than he ever has, at 46.6% from behind the 3 point line since the 2024 All Star break.  So far so good for King James… and whether you think he’s the “GOAT” or not, either way, right now, we are watching “King James” make iconic, longevity history on the court every night.
