Houston Texans And Tampa Bay Buccaneers Clashed In Monday Night Doubleheader

Both teams came out firing on all cylinders in the first half putting up scores on their initial possessions. They also supplied plenty of tough runs, ankle breaking route running and smothering tackles. The Houston Texans and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers clashed in the NFL Monday Night doubleheader. During the first half both teams were operating with focus and precision. But that disappeared in the second half as things got a little sloppy.

Houston wasted no time going down the field in eight plays to score the first points of the game with a 29-yard touchdown reception by Nico Collins. Tampa Bay answered right back with a score. Quarterback Baker Mayfield and veteran wide receiver Mike Evans connected on a couple passes. But he spread the ball to others including Sterling Shepard and tight end Cade Otton. Emeka Egbuka and Bucky Irving were also impact players for the Texans defense to deal with.

Although the Texans defense kept the pressure on Mayfield he proved to be elusive helping the Buccaneers to convert on third downs. Last season Tampa Bay converted 50% of 3rd downs leading the league. Tonight they kept that going converting four of six of them tonight in the first half. Whereas the Texans went two for nine on third down attempts for the second straight week. Obviously, that’s something they will want to get cleaned up right away.

Nevertheless both teams put up points in the first quarter and the Buccaneers added a touchdown in the second quarter. But after that the scoring died out as both teams punted twice before the first half came to an end. Each quarterback was sacked once in the second quarter and had trouble connecting with open receivers. However, the Buccaneers took a 14-10 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The Buccaneers got the ball to start the third quarter and the punting continued. A negative one-yard run and a five-yard sack caused the need to punt. Besides punts the only other thing that happened in the third quarter was a missed Buccaneers’ 38 yard field goal that hit the right upright. At the start of the fourth quarter the Texans had a chance to score but chose to go for the touchdown on 4th & 1. It ended in an incomplete pass to Nico Collins and a turnover on downs.

Special teams did their job by blocking a Buccaneers punt giving the Texans offense a short field. But quarterback C.J. Stroud couldn’t connect with his receivers resulting in a 53 yard field goal for the Texans. Mayfield was sacked on the next Tampa Bay possession and punted. That gave the Texans the chance to take the lead which they did. Nick Chubb ran for the 25-yard touchdown but the 2-pt. conversion failed. Mayfield then worked his magic and extended their drive picking up a 4th and 10. They went on to score the game-winning touchdown.

They couldn’t convert the 2 pt. attempt so the Buccaneers walked away with the 20-19 victory. It’s early in the season but both teams have to tighten up on their operations.
