Houston Rockets Guard Jalen Green Agrees to Three-Year $106 Million Rookie Contract Extension

Houston Rockets Guard Jalen Green Agrees to Three-Year $106 Million Rookie Contract Extension

When you really peer at this move it is a good deal for Houston. And it is being done in a way that can help the team get much stronger in the future. On Monday it was announced that Houston Rockets Guard Jalen Green agreed to a three-year $106 million rookie contract extension. Jalen is the first NBA player to successfully negotiate a 2-plus-1 rookie extension on a nine-figure deal.

ESPN NBA Senior Insider Shams Charania broke the news. He reveals,

“Houston Rockets guard Jalen Green has agreed to a three-year, $106 million rookie contract extension, CAA’s Aaron Mintz, Andrew Morrison and Shakira Wardally told me and Bobby Marks. Player option in third season, providing ability to increase Green’s career earning potential.

Jalen Green is the first NBA player to successfully negotiate a 2-plus-1 rookie extension on a nine figure deal. Green became a pioneer as the first NBA G League Ignite signing in 2020. Now lands the most unique rookie extension ever.

Green’s agent definitely cooked here. Deal may not  have the years but the money is still there. And it leaves the team still in a good spot. A very unique extension. Furthermore, fellow ESPN insider Bobby Marks adds,

The Green extension is unprecedented for multiple reasons:

1. Player option in year 3

Teams have gotten away from putting player options in rookie extensions.

The last time a rookie extension had a PO and salary of $30M+ was Luka Doncic and Trae Young.

2. The ability to extend his contract starting in Oct. 2026.

Green would be eligible to sign a 4/$227M+ extension 2 years from now.

Interesting. Green is certainly betting on himself. All he has to do is work hard in order to display  consistency and succeed in his role on his team. With how things were negotiated, it would seem that Jalen feels confident that he will outperform this contract to really get the bag next time around. That should make fans feel really good about the efforts they will see out of Green.

Bleacher Report’s Bradeaux seems to agree with such sentiments. He mentions,

“The Rockets signed Jalen Green for an AAV of 35.3M, around 10M less than the deals Scottie Barnes, Franz Wagner, and Evan Mobley got.

This is a steal for Houston.

S/O to Jalen Green for taking less money than his counterparts and betting on himself to get his full max the next go around.

Love this deal on both sides.

Per Shams Charania, Jalen Green is the first NBA player ever to successfully negotiate a 2-plus-1 rookie extension on a nine figure deal.

This can be a smart move for Jalen..

The three-year deal provides Green with financial flexibility in the short term and the ability to earn more than $240 million total over the next five years — more than the $224 million current maximum — because of his extension eligibility as soon as October 2026 and the ability to opt out at the age of 25.

This is the what betting on yourself looks like.”

So a very intriguing NBA story with the new season about to begin. Nonetheless, we are sure some Rockets fans are thinking, but what about Alperen Şengün? There are some talks occurring, so will have to see what Houston decides. We will keep you updated.
