Houston Rockets’ Guard Fred VanVleet Suffered Torn Right ACL This Week
The NBA season hasn’t even started yet and already one franchise has suffered a major injury. It has been reported that Houston Rocket’s guard Fred VanVleet suffered a torn right ACL earlier this week. National NBA reporter for YahooSports Kelly Iko posted about the bad news on x.com. He wrote:
“Rockets starting point guard Fred VanVleet has suffered a torn right ACL, sources tell @YahooSports. VanVleet, 31, suffered the injury during a team minicamp in the Bahamas — and is scheduled for surgery this week.”
Although he may miss the entire 2025-2026 season, he will certainly miss significant time this upcoming season. VanVleet joined the team two years ago through free agency. This past offseason the Rockets focused on building a championship team with VanVleet as a primary part of that plan. He’s a steady and positive influence on the locker room and offers veteran leadership to the team. He’s also a former NBA Champion from his time with the Toronto Raptors in 2019. And he’s a one-time All-Star.
This is obviously an unfortunate turn of events for the player and the team. Without VanVleet there will be no pairing with Kevin Durant. And younger players like Amen Thompson and Reed Sheppard will need to grow and develop more quickly. Bringing in Durant and getting the young guys another year of experience was supposed to put the Rockets in championship contention. To become a real challenge to the reigning champions Oklahoma City Thunder. But without VanVleet can that still be possible? We won’t know until the season unfolds.

Last season VanVleet finished the season averaging 14.1 points (shooting 34.5% from 3 on 7.7 attempts) and 5.6 assists while providing his usual dogged effort on defense. But ESPN analyst Ryan Clark posted about who VanVleet, the man, really is. Clark posted on x.com:
“The Houston rockets new $130 million man @FredVanVleet says his road to stardom is “the sh*t that you dream about. He went from undrafted Missouri valley conference star to NBA Champion… Finally, he became an all star. As he lives out his basement dreams he’s not the type for an entourage. The loyalty in him won’t allow it. His vision was to bring his circle with him and allow them to elevate as he has. He is still too focused to take it all in, & it’s his core that allows him to stay humble.”
Without their starting point guard, it will be an uphill battle for the Rockets to be the championship team they want to be. Furthermore, the Rockets are barely under the first apron, which will prevent them from signing someone else without going over. But Kendrick Perkins is still optimistic about the Rockets’ chances:
“I wouldn’t overly react to the point guard situation,” he said, “because they have so many guys that can actually push the rock, from Amen Thompson, to Kevin Durant. There’s a reason we can Sengun ‘Baby Jokic’ because he can be that point center.”
No doubt, the Rockets hope Perkins is correct.
