Houston Rockets Alperen Sengun Agrees to Five-Year $185 million Extension

Houston Rockets Alperen Sengun Agrees to Five-Year $185 million Extension

One day. Two contracts. And Houston has “stabilized” a young core that is setup for the next few years. On Monday afternoon, news slid down the NBA pipeline that the Houston Rockets Alperen Sengun has agreed to a five-year $185 million extension.

There had been talks occurring so it felt like something was certainly brewing and in the works. All morning, there were rumblings galore. Especially, as confirmation came along that another player on the Rockets was getting extended as well.

So then, it has been quite a busy day for the Houston franchise. Just mere hours before announcing an extension with Sengun. It was heralded that guard Jalen Green had also agreed to a rookie contract extension worth $106 million (3 years).

Nevertheless, later in the day ESPN’s Bobby Marks breaks the news regarding Alperen, providing key contract details. He states,

“Houston center Alperen Sengun has agreed on a five-year, $185 million rookie extension, his agents Sean Kennedy and Jeff Schwartz of Excel Basketball, tells ESPN. The contract includes a player option in the last year.

Sengun is the first player to sign a five year rookie extension and have a player option since Luka Doncic and Trae Young.”

This deal is very surprising. Alperen is one of those players that you could easily see getting the max. But that’s not what occurred here. The man did the Rockets a solid, giving the organization like a $40 million discount.

Furthermore, with the kind of contract extension Sengun and Green received, Houston has put themselves in a position to still be able to go out and “star hunt.” But, the Rockets youth movement and development is looking pretty promising. For instance, Sengun, 22, blossomed into an All-Star candidate last season — and earned a third-place finish in Most Improved Player voting — by averaging 21.3 points, 9.3 rebounds and 5 assists per game for Houston before his season was cut short by an ankle injury. Plus, he also shot 53.7% from the field and 29.7% from 3-point distance.

Additionally, Şengün leads a young Rockets core that also features Green, Jabari Smith Jr., Amen Thompson and rookie Reed Sheppard. All of these guys are younger than 23 years old. But the team does have veteran influence as well. Due to veterans Fred VanVleet and Dillon Brooks being in the starting lineup. Thus, with a mix of youth and experience, the Rockets are looking to become contenders.

Therefore, we will see how things play out for them this year. The Houston Rockets will open the season on Wednesday against the Charlotte Hornets.
