Houston Astros in Pursuit of Free Agent Blake Snell

Opening Day in the MLB is approaching fast and teams are working hard to finalize and fill any remaining positions as well as holes. For instance, the Houston Astros are in pursuit of free agent Blake Snell to add to their already stacked starting pitching staff. This possible free agency move shows that the Astros are still all in, regardless of cost, to get their hands on yet another championship.

Chandler Rome, an Astros beat writer for The Athletic; has been steadily gathering intel on the Snell scenario. Rome reveals that looking for great pitching has been apart of Houston’s plans for some time and Blake Snell definitely fits the bill. Especially, since a new injury for them as emerged. Chandler reports,

“The Astros had been in the starting pitching market before José Urquidy’s injury today. José Urquidy pulled himself from his minor league game after 43 pitches with right elbow pain, Joe Espada said. Urquidy is being seen by team trainers now. José Urquidy, like Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery, is represented by Scott Boras.

The Astros remain engaged in the free-agent starting pitching market, multiple sources tell The Athletic. Owner Jim Crane coveted Blake Snell at last August’s trade deadline. It’s worth wondering if they may circle back.

Astros GM Dana Brown: ‘As I’ve said multiple times, we always have our foot on the gas when it comes to winning and acquiring pitching. As long as Snell is on the market, we check in to ask what is the latest. Nothing new as of now.’

One note on Blake Snell: he rejected a qualifying offer from the Padres, so any team that signs him will forfeit a draft pick. The Astros already gave up one pick to sign Josh Hader, who also declined a qualifying offer from the Padres.”

Mark Feinstand for MLB.com, also reveals that Houston is not the only ball club taking a look at and considering Snell. Feinstand states,

“Blake Snell threw four simulated innings on Friday in Seattle in front of scouts from teams including the Giants and Astros, per source. Those in attendance were said to be impressed with how ready he looks.”

It looks like the Snell sweepstakes is firmly back on. Which team will end up with the two-time Cy Young winner? We shall see.
