Houston Astros Eliminated From 2024 Playoffs by Detroit Tigers

Alright sports fans, be honest; who had this one on their postseason bingo card? For the last several seasons the Astros have been a constant presence among teams vying for a championship. However, this season would prove to be a quick exit for the ball club. In a stunning twist, the Houston Astros are eliminated from the 2024 playoffs by red hot wild card team the Detroit Tigers.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan immediately commented on the Astros departure from the playoffs. He states,

“FINAL: Tigers 5, Astros 2

After seven consecutive appearances in the ALCS, the Houston Astros have been ousted in the wild card round by the Detroit Tigers.

The hottest team in baseball just went into Houston and, led by the Astros’ former manager, bounced them from October.”

As one can see, the playoffs always continue to teach a few lessons. One, payroll does not matter. Out of all 30 teams, the Astros have the third highest payroll. Whereas Detroit is ranked as the 26th.

Furthermore, the regular season really doesn’t tell the whole story. A team could be highly favored, but their record for example, isn’t an indicator of how far they will go. Houston had more wins than Detroit but the Tigers still came away victorious.

The playoffs are about who gets hot at the right time. Who can perform when the lights are brightest. And which teams have the gritty, determination to press on leaving everything on the field in order to hoist that trophy high.

Throughout the wild card series the Astros never could get their offense going. Which as we all know is the kiss of death in the postseason. Houston lost game one, 3-1. And game two, 5-2.

Yet, in game two there was at least a little bit more hope of tying the series up. The Astros had even got to the point in the eighth inning of bringing out their closer, Josh Hader; to try and close things out. However, the situation at hand took a major roller coaster dive to the bottom. Josh Hader comes in, proceeds to load the bases; and then allows Andy Ibanez to hit a bases clearing knock off of him. Season over.

Nevertheless, congratulations to the Tigers for moving on to the next round. Detroit battled hard and won. They will now play the Cleveland Guardians on Saturday.
