Hornets Kon Knueppel Breaks NBA Rookie Record For 3-Pointers in a Season in Just 59 Games

Shooters SHOOT. Seriously, nothing but mad respect to Cooper Flagg, but just go ahead and name Charlotte’s guy Rookie of the Year. It is deserved as well as warranted. Especially, since he is not only having a historic season personally, but so is his team. The Charlotte Hornets Kon Knueppel breaks the NBA rookie record for 3-pointers in a season in just 59 games.

For several weeks now, it hasn’t been a matter of if, but when, Kon would break the NBA’s single-season rookie record for 3-pointers. With 1:05 remaining in the third quarter, he hit the long range, all-time leaderboard dagger. Needing six 3PM to set a new NBA rookie record, Kon Knueppel went above and beyond with a career-high-tying eight triples in the Hornets’ ninth straight road win. A 133-109 victory in Indiana.

Basketball fans knew Knueppel was going to be special when he matched the GOAT of the three. Golden State’s Stephen Curry. Kon kicked off his historical February tying with number 30. Kon Knueppel tied Steph Curry’s rookie three-point total (166)… and he did it in 30 fewer games.

But even before the Curry milestone, right at the beginning of the season Knueppel showed that he was going to be special. In his NBA debut, Kon hit 16 three-pointers over his first four games. Which in turn gave Kon Knueppel a special designation; he now holds the NBA record for the most made threes through the first four games of a career. Knueppel is also the 1st player in NBA history with 150+ Points & 30+ Threes in the first 10 games of his career.

After Charlotte pummeled the Indiana Pacers on Thursday; the National Basketball Association proclaimed Knueppel’s greatness online and placed a bright shining spotlight on Charlotte’s success as a team. The league stated,

“HORNETS HISTORY: The Charlotte Hornets paired another win with a few milestones last night. Kon Knueppel broke Keegan Murray’s rookie single-season record for three-pointers (206), and the team extended its franchise record for consecutive road victories to nine. Charlotte also tied an NBA mark with 72 threes over a three-game span. At 13-3 since Jan. 22, the Hornets own the Eastern Conference’s best record during that stretch.”

Awesome. Nevertheless, the wild part is that Kon Knueppel already stands alone with the three pointer rookie record. But there’s plenty of time to add on. With 20 or so more games left to go in the regular season, Knueppel can continue to tack on to his rookie legacy and put the record further out of reach.

The next rookie to try and beat Kon’s record will have to do so with immense speed. Knueppel has made 200 career 3-pointers 11 games faster than anyone else. And the next intriguing stat to keep an eye on; the Hornets franchise record for most made threes in a season is 260 held by Kemba Walker (2018-19 season). If Kon keeps up his pace he could shatter this record as well. As we said, what a special player.
