Head Coach Mike McDaniel Signed New Deal With Miami Dolphins

They have their franchise quarterback, some of the best wide receivers and now they have their head coach. Head coach Mike McDaniel signed a new deal with the Miami Dolphins. It seems the Dolphins have just about all the pieces in place to be a serious contender. Jeff Darlington of ESPN provided some nuance about the deal:

Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel has signed a new contract that extends him through the 2028 season, sources said. Under McDaniel, the Dolphins had the top-ranked offense in the NFL in 2023 (first time since 1994). They also had their first back-to-back playoff appearances in 23 years. I’m told McDaniel has an especially strong working relationship with GM Chris Grier, CEO Tom Garfinkel and cap guru Brandon Shore. It’s the type of cohesive group that owner Steve Ross covets. Playoff wins are obviously the final piece to the puzzle, but the organization believes McDaniel is the coach to lead them there.

McDaniel joined the Dolphins in 2022 after several years serving as an assistant coach. Prior to joining the Dolphins he had been the San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator. When he arrived in Miami, the Dolphins hadn’t made the playoffs since 2016 or won its division since 2008. Miami wanted a coach who could build up the offense and extract the best out of the quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. And it looks like he has succeeded in doing those two things. Under McDaniel’s leadership, Miami made back-to-back playoff appearances for the first time since 2000-2001.

Brian Flores had been the head coach prior to McDaniel and Tagovailoa recently made some negative comments about Flores. Flores took his comments in stride and wished nothing but the best for Tagovailoa. On the other hand, the QB had nothing but high praise for McDaniel. So it seems that this coach/QB combo may be the right fit for Miami.

But as Darlington said, they have to start winning in the playoffs. And part of the solution to that problem is improving the defense. They have have had three defensive coordinators in as many years. But the good news is that McDaniel works well with the front office heavies. So together they should be able to come up with a plan to stabilize the defense. If that happens then Miami could dominate the AFC East and the entire league for years to come.
