Hard Work Earned An Extension For Panthers’ Chuba Hubbard

When you’re at the team’s facility before the break of dawn and still there after sunset, people notice. It was that hard work that earned an extension for Carolina Panthers’ running back Chuba Hubbard. Hubbard has agreed to terms on a four-year, $33.2 million extension with the Panthers, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported on Thursday. Hubbard’s deal includes a maximum value of $37.2 million, with $15 million in new, fully guaranteed money, per Rapoport.

The Panthers want to become the sort of team that drafts and develops players. While also wanting to run the ball to create a personality. And clearly they are expecting Hubbard to be a cornerstone of their philosophy. According to head coach Dave Canales and general manager Dan Morgan, Hubbard exemplifies what they want the Panthers to look like. “We are excited to sign Chuba to an extension and keep him in Carolina,” said Morgan. “He exemplifies everything we want on and off the field. Chuba is passionate about football, is productive and is committed to his teammates and winning.”

Hubbard leads the Panthers with six touchdowns this year, matching a career-high. He’s also fifth in the NFL in rushing yards with 665 and is in the top 10 in the league in both rushing first downs (33) and yards per attempt (5.00). The 2021 NFL Draft fourth-round pick was set to be a free-agent at the end of the 2024 season. So it was a priority for the Panthers to get the extension done. Now they will have him through at least the 2028 season.

The team detailed the kind of work Hubbard has been putting in:

“As in, in the athletic training room before dawn, getting his body ready. As in, on the field three hours before kickoff every game day, catching balls from the Jugs machine in those lonely moments when he’s the only player on the field. As in, an hour after every practice, going through his normal routine with his partner Tommy Tremble long after everyone else is eating lunch. As in, leaving in the dark again after putting in more than a shift.”

This is how hard the Panthers envision all of their players working. QB Andy Dalton chimed in:

“I mean, I feel like he’s a special player and a guy that you can look at and be like, that’s an example of how we want to do things. And I think that has allowed him to have the type of year that he’s having so far, and we need to keep going with him because he’s doing a lot of really good things.”

Congrats Hubbard, keep up the hard work!
