Hall of Famer Willie Mays Passes at 93

Icon. Legend. THE CATCH. And one of the greatest baseball players ever. With heavy hearts we report that game-changer, World Series champion and Hall of Famer Willie Mays has passed at 93 years old.

We don’t wish to say goodbye. Therefore, we’ll just, “Say Hey.” Willie Mays still holds lifetime Major League records for putouts by an outfielder (7,095), homers by a center fielder (640) and homers in extra innings (22). In fact, when it comes to numerous all-time lists Mays ranks second only to the great Babe Ruth. Therefore, if you ever wanted to insert the ol’ “Heroes get remembered… but legends never die” adage; now would be the time.

Nevertheless, Mays is known for many things; however, one thing that’s not always discussed is his longevity. He played for 23 seasons. Yes, by today’s standards… a baby born when he began playing could legally drink by the time he was finished. Wild.

Moreover, Willie was named NL MVP in 1954 and 1965. He also tied with the amazing Roberto Clemente for most gold glove honors by an outfielder. Willie hit .307/.387/.572 and averaged 35 home runs and 18 stolen bases per season. Also, playing in the Negro Leagues and for the New York/ San Francisco Giants; Mays hit 660 home runs, totaled 3,293 hits and scored more than 2,000 runs.

And oh yeah… he was a 24-time All Star.

The San Francisco Giants were among the first to break the very solemn news about Mays. In a post to social media platform X (formerly Twitter); they declare,

“It is with great sadness that we announce that San Francisco Giants Legend and Hall of Famer Willie Mays passed away peacefully this afternoon at the age of 93.

He leaves us with a lasting reminder: to work hard and find joy in this great game, and this extraordinary life. Say Hey, Willie Mays. The best there ever was.”

Former president Barack Obama also takes to the social airwaves to say a few words about the remarkable Willie Mays. He says,

“Willie Mays wasn’t just a singular athlete, blessed with an unmatched combination of grace, skill and power. He was also a wonderfully warm and generous person – and an inspiration to an entire generation. I’m lucky to have spent time with him over the years, and Michelle and I send our deepest condolences to his family.”

Yes, on and off the field Willie made an impression. He inspired many. And dazzled and entertained countless others with his extraordinary skill and abilities.

After the confirmation of Mays passing, Major League Baseball released a statement about Willie’s undeniable impact on the sport. They state,

“We are heartbroken to learn of the passing of Hall of Famer Willie Mays, one of the most exciting all-around players in the history of our sport.

Mays was a two-time MVP, 24-time All-Star, 12-time Gold Glove Award winner, and a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

In commemoration of “The Catch” as perhaps the most famous play in the history of the Fall Classic, the World Series MVP Award was named in his honor in 2017.

Mays was 93 years old.”

We could go on for hours about one of the best baseball players ever. However, we’ll leave you with one more quick story. It comes from CC Sabathia (Carsten Charles Sabathia Jr.); a former American baseball pitcher who played 19 seasons. He recalls,

“I’ll never forget this day when I walked in and heard, ‘that’s that boy who wears his hat like this.’

RIP Willie Mays. You changed the game forever and inspired kids like me to chase our dream. Thank you for everything that you did on and off the field. Always in our hearts!”

Well said. Willie Mays lived and breathed baseball. It was his love, it was his passion. And thanks to his mesmerizing gameplay he’s made it all of ours too.
