Grizzlies’ Jaylen Wells Who Took Terrible Fall Discharged From Hospital
It’s been a rough last part of the season for the Memphis Grizzlies. In the past few weeks they have lost veteran Brandon Clarke for the season after sustaining a knee injury. They also lost their head coach, Taylor Jenkins after he was fired at the end of March. And now last night the Grizzlies’ rookie Jaylen Wells who took a terrible fall has been discharged from the hospital today. ESPN NBA Insider Shams Charania posted more details about the incident:
“Memphis Grizzlies rookie Jaylen Wells is awake, alert and moving his extremities after being taken off court in a stretcher tonight in Charlotte, his agent Aman Dhesi tells ESPN. Wells has sustained a broken right wrist, Dhesi said, and will continue receiving medical care.
Great update: Jaylen Wells has been discharged from the hospital after scary fall Tuesday night, agent Aman Dhesi tells ESPN. However, Wells is now sidelined for an extended period of time with a broken wrist after appearing in 79 games and vying for an All-Rookie team selection.”
However, initial indications from family members and reports from his agent suggest Wells is likely lost for the rest of the season. Due to injuries from the hard fall he suffered when he landed awkwardly from a dunk in the first half of Tuesday’s game.
But as Shams mentioned Wells has a good chance to be selected for the All-Rookie team. His rookie year has been very productive as he has played a critical role for the team. He was leading all NBA rookies in games started (72), made 3-pointers (138) and team wins (46). In last night’s game, Wells finished with three points, five rebounds, two assists and a steal in 11 minutes before the injury. His season average was 10.5 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.7 assists in 26.1 minutes.

Of course his coaches and teammates were very concerned about him. But they pulled themselves together and went on to win 124-100 over the Hornets. Interim coach Tuomas Iisalo spoke about Wells and his toughness saying: “It puts things into perspective. He’s an incredibly tough kid, he’s had a great season, and he’ll have a great recovery.”
Teammate Ja Morant expressed similar thoughts: “We know Jaylen,” Morant said as the reality of Wells’ situation settled. “He always wants to be on the floor no matter what’s going on, whether he’s got an injury or whatever. It’s tough, especially for somebody who plays a lot of minutes for us, being really productive. We’ve just got to stay with him, keep praying for him and let him know God’s got him.”
Wells proved them correct when he posted from the hospital this picture:
Clearly the kid has a lot of fight in him. But his team is going to have to play without him as they make their playoff push. In the meantime, we wish a speedy recovery to Jaylen!
