Green Bay Packers Want Tush Push Banned by NFL
There are plays that get the boot because they don’t make any sense or real impact to the game. There are other plays that get annihilated and stricken from the realm of legitimate competition because they are deemed too dangerous. But still, sometimes plays are just plainly disliked by some. That is the case with the “Brotherly Shove.” On Monday, it was revealed that the Green Bay Packers want the Tush Push officially banned by the NFL.
Monday morning, just a couple weeks after the Eagles became world champions. One team came forward with a proposal to ban the play that Philadelphia has perfected in order to pick up short yardage; and in many cases convert on fourth down. The organization did so in an anonymous fashion. However, hours later they were outed.
Dianna Russini a senior NFL insider for The Athletic confirmed that the Packers were in fact the secretive and mysterious team. She simply says, “The Green Bay Packers are the team that submitted a proposal to the NFL’s competition committee to ban the tush push, per sources.”
Furthermore, one of the Eagles players, Cooper DeJean spoke out about the Push Tush. Whether or not it should be banned. Cooper believes opponents need to just defend better against it better. Regarding banning it DeJean mentions,
“I don’t think it should [be banned]. I think it is a really physical football play. It’s almost unstoppable, so you got to find ways to stop it. Luckily they don’t run it in practice against us; so we don’t have to go up against it. But I feel bad for the other teams that have to see that.”

Nevertheless, the President of the Packers feels much differently than Cooper DeJean. Packers president and CEO Mark Murphy stated at the beginning of this month that he is not a fan of the play, detailing his reasoning in his monthly column on the team’s website. He writes:
“I am not a fan of this play. There is no skill involved and it is almost an automatic first down on plays of a yard or less. The series of plays with the Commanders jumping offsides in the NFC Championship Game to try to stop the play was ridiculous. The referee even threatened to give the Eagles an automatic touchdown if the Commanders did not stop it.
I would like to see the league prohibit pushing or aiding the runner (QB) on this play. There used to be a rule prohibiting this, but it is no longer enforced because I believe it was thought to be too hard for the officials to see.
The play is bad for the game, and we should go back to prohibiting the push of the runner. This would bring back the traditional QB sneak. That worked pretty well for Bart Starr and the Packers in the Ice Bowl.”
While other teams like the Packers have utilized the Tush Push; and done so successfully. Really the Eagles have come to fore as the best team to consistently get it to work. Nonetheless, now we we wait and see what the NFL will decide in this matter. But until then, what do you think? Should the Tush Push stay or go?
