Green Bay Packers Announced They Are Releasing Cornerback Jaire Alexander

Finding a shutdown cornerback to play in the NFL is a tall order to fill. In the past there have been some really great cornerbacks like Mike Haynes, Darrell Green, Champ Bailey and Darrelle Revis. But with the league rule changes that have happened in the past few years it’s getting more difficult to find guys who can play the position well. New guys like Christian Gonzalez, Cooper DeJean and Sauce Gardner are trying to make their mark. However, today the Green Bay Packers announced that they are releasing cornerback Jaire Alexander.

Alexander has been in the league for seven seasons, being drafted by the Packers in 2018. His career got off to a good start but eventually he was derailed due to several injuries. According to ESPN reporter Rob Demovksy: “Alexander appeared in just seven regular-season games each of the past two seasons and did not play after Nov. 17 last year. He went on injured reserve the final week of the season and had knee surgery on what he said was a torn PCL. Still, he finished second on the team in pass breakups (seven) and tied for second in interceptions (two).”

The team attempted to trade Alexander but no offers were forthcoming. Therefore, they informed Alexander this morning that they would be releasing him. Making him a free agent for the first time in his career. Apparently it was the lack of availability that caused the team to make the decision. Packers president Mark Murphy told Dave Schroeder of WBAY on Monday:

“Well, first of all, he’s been a great player for us,” Murphy said. “Obviously, elite talent and you know unfortunately just injured a lot. It’s kind of unfortunate that’s a big part of the game.”

“The reality is for the last four years for Jaire, it’s about half of the games he’s been able to play,” Murphy added. “So we kind of have been used to it.”

Despite releasing the talented cornerback, the Packers are prepared to move on without him. Currently they have Keisean Nixon, Nate Hobbs and others on their roster. Just this offseason, the Packers signed Nate Hobbs to a four-year, $48 million deal in free agency. With that financial investment, Hobbs will likely work as one of the starting corners on the boundary.

Releasing Alexander post-June 1 will save cap space because he will carry a $7.5 million cap charge this year, saving Green Bay just over $17.1 million. Alexander was scheduled to make $17.5 million this season, but none of that was guaranteed. However, despite his injury issues there will likely be a team willing to sign the top-tier cornerback. And he’s only 28 years old so he still has time to play. Some teams that may be interested in him are the Miami Dolphins, the San Francisco 49ers and the Philadelphia Eagles. We’ll probably find out soon where he will end up.
