Grant Fisher Stunned In The Men’s 10000M Race
I can’t find the words to describe the kind of stamina it takes to run the 10000M race. Running 25 400M laps without stopping just defies comprehension. However, this is a race in which the Ethiopians have dominated. Yet today, Grant Fisher stunned the world in the men’s 10000M race. He ran the race in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics but finished off the podium in fifth place. Grant was absolutely positive that he could do better.
So he made the decision to leave Bowerman Track Club in October 2023 and move to a high altitude. He later announced that he had relocated to Park City, Utah and was being trained by his high school coach, Mike Scannell. It was a good move because in February 2024 he went on to set an American record in the indoor 2-mile of 8:03.62 at the Millrose Games. Following that was the Olympic Trials in which he won the 10000M with a time of 27:49.47 to qualify for his second Olympics. Fisher also won the 5000M at the trials thereby winning the 10000M and 5000M at the same U.S. track championship.
All this winning must have shot his confidence through the roof as it showed when he raced in the Olympics today. From the very start of the race, Fisher went to the front of the pack and stayed there with the best of the best. He remained cool, calm, and collected throughout the race, not at all intimidated by the world class competitors surrounding him. But with 10 laps to go there was a collective gasp as Grant Fisher nearly went down. He stepped on the inside rail and and had a slight ankle twist and it looked like he might fall. But he quickly recovered and was back in fourth place without too much trouble.

Because he kept pace with the leaders he was able to put on a burst of speed in the final lap. And with that burst he got himself onto the podium with a bronze medal finish (26:43.46). He was barely edged out by silver medalist Berihu Aregawi (26:43.44) of Ethiopia. Check out the thrilling finish, it’s not to be missed. And so Grant Fisher becomes just the SECOND American man in 56 YEARS to win a 10,000M Olympic medal!
Wow, thank you for providing such high drama on a Friday afternoon. Congratulations Grant Fisher on a job well done!
