Golden State Warriors’ Stephen Curry Named 2024-25 Twyman-Stokes Teammate of the Year

If you have ever watched him play on the basketball court then this makes absolute sense. He has no problem sharing and passing the ball with his teammates. He selflessly fights for rebounds but is willing to take and make the tough shots when it’s necessary. For these reasons and many others, Golden State Warriors Stephen Curry has been named the 2024-25 Twyman-Stokes Teammate of the Year. The story behind Twyman and Stokes is fitting for a teammate award.

Jack Twyman and Maurice Stokes were teammates on the Rochester/Cincinnati Royals who later became the Sacramento Kings. In the last game of the 1958 regular season, Stokes was knocked down on a play and hit his head on the floor, which rendered him unconscious. The injury manifested itself in the upcoming days, leaving Stokes permanently paralyzed after having seizures. Twyman became Stokes’ legal guardian, caring for all of his needs. To help with Stokes’ ongoing medical finances, Twyman organized the “Maurice Stokes Memorial Basketball Game” to raise funds for Stokes’ daily care needs. He remained his guardian until Stokes passed away in 1970 at the age of 30.

The award recognizes the player deemed the best teammate based on selfless play, leadership as a mentor and role model to other NBA players, and commitment to his team. For the 2024-25 Twyman-Stokes Teammate of the Year Award, a panel of league executives selected 12 finalists (six from each conference). Current NBA players selected the winner from the list of finalists. Curry received 66 1st place votes, 20 more than Steven Adams of Houston who came in second in the voting.

Twyman certainly proved to be the ultimate teammate and Curry embodies that same spirit. Lead Assistant Coach Terry Stotts shared the history of the award in the video here.

Although this is Curry’s first time winning the Teammate of the Year award, he has been recognized on many other occasions. He won the NBA Sportsmanship Award (2010-11), which honors a player who best represents the ideals of sportsmanship on the court. Curry is also a two-time Kia NBA Most Valuable Player, an 11-time NBA All-Star and the league’s career leader in three-pointers made.  He has won four NBA championships, all with Golden State.

Curry is well-loved by his teammates and lots of NBA fans. Congratulations Stephen on winning a much deserved award!
