Golden State Valkyries: Newest WNBA Expansion Team Unveiled!
Okay, they did the THING with the name! The Women’s National Basketball Association had announced they would be expanding the league with a franchise in the Bay Area. However, at the time there were little to no details available; including what the team’s name would be or who would be the GM. Nonetheless, today that all the changes as the professional league unveils the Golden State Valkyries the newest WNBA expansion team!
The name is so fitting especially, in relation to the NBA’s Golden State Warriors. Valkyries are basically hardcore female warriors. So this warrior theme will seamlessly play out well together; for these two franchises sharing the same facilities.
Additionally, we are also loving the choice of color in the Valkyries’ logo. Purple. This is a color that denotes grandeur, dignity, power, extravagance, wisdom, sophistication, wealth and creativity. Therefore, if you ever wanted a new franchise to succeed; donning it in tones that convey success is definitely a great start.

The Valkyries official website is also now up and ready for visitors. It provides additional intel into the team. Including the meaning behind their name; along with who will be their GM. Some details that they mention:
“The WNBA is coming to the Bay Area with the Golden State Valkyries’ inaugural season tipping off in May 2025. A combination of strength and grace, the Golden State Valkyries are writing the next chapter in the epic tale of the WNBA, a league that has transcended limitations and norms over the last 27 years.
[The unveiling of the brand’s identity], Valkyries are a host of warrior women who are fearless and unwavering – flying through air and sea alike. The expansion franchise, which marks the first WNBA expansion team since 2008, will begin play in the 2025 WNBA season.
WNBA Golden State has named Ohemaa Nyanin as the team’s general manager, it was announced today. In her role, Nyanin will oversee all basketball operations, inclusive of roster construction, team building and player development. Nyanin will report to Warriors Co-Executive Chairman and CEO, Joe Lacob, and will begin her tenure with the team on May 13, 2024.”
Awesome. It is exciting to see the WNBA expanding. Basketball fans have been asking for more teams and the league is now working to get them all in place. So far, the plan is for the league to expand to 16 teams by 2028 and that the goal is to bring in a 14th team for 2026
