Gold Medal Basketball Games Kept Us Tied In Knots
Raise your hands if you have any fingernails left. Both the men and the women had us on the edge of our seats. Or to put it another way the gold medal basketball games kept us tied in knots. First the men put us on the rack with their final game yesterday. And this morning the women cranked up the torture another notch with their gold medal game. And both games featured France vs USA.
On Saturday the team USA men were playing better than they had against Serbia. But that didn’t mean that France wasn’t giving them their best shot because they were. During the course of the game the USA would lead by double digits and then the lead would shrink to as low as a three-point differential. But as Lebron James pointed out they stayed calm.
“We just kept our composure,” LeBron James said after the game. “We have been in some tight games throughout the preliminary games, and we had a tight game against Serbia so we knew we were going to get everybody’s biggest punch, so it was all about staying composed and willing our way to victory.”
Eventually in the fourth quarter, Stephen Curry did what Stephen Curry does best. He sank four three-pointers near the end of the game to put it away for the USA. The final score was 98-87 with Curry putting up 24 points in the game. Regarding the Olympics Curry said:
“Obviously I understand it was gonna be a really tough task with some great teams that we were gonna have to face, and there’s a sense of relief at the end,” Curry said of his Olympics experience. “But it’s more like a sense of accomplishment, obviously, knowing what we were able to do.”

As for the ladies, their game was even more tightly contested. The French women refused to go quietly, they fought hard and gave the American women all they could handle. There were lead changes, tough defense and less than great offense. At the buzzer it looked like Gabby Williams hit a three-pointer to tie the game. But she was inside the line so it was only two points instead of three. And that’s how the American women pulled off a victory of 67-66 with A’ja Wilson scoring 21 points in the game.
Breanna Stewart shared her thoughts on the game.
“It was a little bit ugly. But no matter what whether it’s good, ugly, whatever we just want to come out on top, and we did that, and we go home with this gold,” Breanna Stewart told reporters afterwards.
USA Keeps Basketball Dominance Alive At The Olympics
With this win the men’s basketball team has won their fifth straight Olympic gold medal. Beating the French on their home turf in front of a rowdy crowd is no easy feat. That’s an amazing track record for the men. But the women’s record is even better. This gold medal makes it their their eighth straight Olympic gold medal. Hence it’s not an exaggeration to say that the USA still has the most dominant basketball players in the world.
But the world is catching up. At the 2012 Games in London the U.S. women beat France by 36 points. Today they beat France by 1 point. Clearly, France has come a long way in 12 years and they will only get better. The same can be said for other teams like Germany, Belgium and Australia who won the bronze medal. Things should really heat up when we reconvene at the LA 2028 Olympics.
