Giants Robbie Ray Makes Season Debut Against Los Angeles Dodgers
When an athlete gets hurt you never know if they will come back with the same tenacity or not perform as well. This is especially true if surgery is involved. However, for a former Cy Young winner, he came back with a VENGEANCE. Giants Robbie Ray makes his season debut against the Los Angeles Dodgers and helps his team get a much needed win.
In case you forgot the full story. Or can’t recall what all went down with Ray. Alden Gonzalez gives a quick recap stating,
“It had been nearly 16 months, a period that included 2 surgeries, since Robbie Ray last stepped on a major league mound. He began with 2 hit by pitches, 2 walks and 2 wild pitches versus the first 5 batters — but he wound up limiting the Dodgers to 1 run and 0 hits in 5 innings.”
Keeping the Dodgers from getting into their winning groove is definitely a big ask at times. LA does tend to play well during the regular season. Plus it is a team that has Glasnow, Freeman, Smith and the $700 million dollar man himself, Shohei Ohtani. But having Robbie Ray back in this game and the foreseeable future; is certainly what the Giants have been banking on. NBC Sports reporter for the Bay area, Alex Pavlovic explains,
“Well, there’s the Robbie Ray the Giants have been waiting for. Robbie Ray threw 33 pitches in his first inning back and had a hard time finding the strike zone, but he somehow limited the Dodgers to one run. Robbie Ray threw five no-hit innings in his return from Tommy John surgery. He almost got knocked out in the first but ended up striking out eight, including Shohei Ohtani twice. The Giants certainly won the trade.”
Back during the start of the year, the Seattle Mariners made the decision to move Robbie. Especially, since they needed guys who were more ready to go from the start of the 2024 season. Therefore, Ray would not be a fit since he would not be ready until around the trade deadline.
Due to these developments, the San Francisco Giants are able to acquire the 2021 Cy Young winner from the Mariners for outfielder Mitch Haniger and right-hander Anthony DeSclafani. Ray had a full no-trade clause for 2022 and 2023 but could be moved without his input now that the calendar had flipped to 2024.

So then, we can conclude that Ray’s debut this season was a success. Started off rough. But he recovered beautifully.
Moreover, if you like a little sports history in your coffee. You’re going to love this. Major League Baseball’s very own Sarah Langs reports, “Robbie Ray’s 5 IP is the longest no-hit bid by a Giants starter in his team debut in the expansion era (1961). It’s the longest in a Giants debut since Juan Marichal in his MLB debut – 7 2/3 hitless on July 19, 1960, en route to a 1-hit shutout.”
