Giants Jung Hoo Lee Will Have Season-Ending Shoulder Surgery
San Francisco had hoped to have a much better year after signing several players such as Jorge Soler, Matt Chapman and 2023 Cy Young winner Blake Snell. However, the 2024 season continues to head in the wrong direction. The team is currently in second to last place in their division; trailing the Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres and Arizona Diamondbacks. Now, a brand new blow… the Giants Jung Hoo Lee will have season-ending shoulder surgery in order to repair his labrum.
Lee’s labrum suffered a tear severe enough to need more serious treatment. However, the Giants reveal that he will need around 6 months to recover and heal up. But, the good news is that he is expected to make a full recovery and be ready for the 2025 season.
So then, how exactly did this injury occur? Well, Lee was working very hard in center and unfortunately, a play went terribly wrong. Yahoo Sports recalls the incident which occurred over the weekend. They report,
“The injury occurred Sunday, when Lee attempted to make a jumping catch in right-center at the Oracle Park wall. His glove missed the double from Cincinnati Reds infielder Jeimer Candelario, while his arm came down hard on the padded top of the fence.
Lee left the game with an athletic trainer and was placed on the 10-day injured list with what the Giants called a left shoulder dislocation. The news got worse Tuesday, when the team revealed Lee had sustained structural damage in his shoulder and would seek a second opinion.”

Bob Melvin, the Giants’ skipper made a brief comment about Lee’s devastating injury. Moreover, he gave fans a little reassurance that the team will not give up; but carry on and “do their thing.” Melvin says,
“First of all I feel bad for him, but obviously for our team he loves playing baseball and he loves playing for the Giants and this was a significant sign for us, so it’s disappointing for everybody, mostly for him. We’ll find a way to do our thing without him, but he was really a key guy for us and he knows that. Nothing you can do about it. You play a certain way and sometimes these things are going to happen. Yeah, this is going to take a little bit to sink in.”
Injuries is never fun to hear about. Especially, for fans hoping for a very different outcome. Nevertheless, there’s plenty of baseball left for the Giants to get back in the running; and we hope that Lee heals fast and gets back into playing form as soon as possible.
