Giants Bob Melvin’s Hot Seat May Stay Lukewarm-Despite Another Disappointing Season
The reunion is not turning out to be what both sides had hoped it would become. The Bay Area guy returning to his roots and managing San Francisco back to glory. However, the past two seasons have been anything but glamorous; leaving some to speculate whether SF’s manager is about to manage his final game with the organization. However, truth be told, Giants Bob Melvin’s hot seat may stay lukewarm despite yet another disappointing season.
While there are numerous reasons that one can clearly see why Melvin should be headed towards an exit. Reasons that include a plethora of issues observed first in San Diego; that now seem to be unfortunately playing out in San Francisco as well. From confusing lineups to even more bizarre bullpen management. The Giants fell apart twice this season and now the blame game begins.
Several losses can be pinned directly on Melvin’s inability to “pull the right strings” when it comes to in-game decision making. However, to be fair, he’s also not the one the guys walking up to the plate to bat. In such cases, he can only work with that he’s been blessed with from the front office.
Yet, the front office has been busy. When comparing rosters from the days of Kapler to the Melvin tenure; there’s a huge improvement. From Jung Hoo Lee to pitcher Robbie Ray and veteran Justin Verlander as well as Rafael Devers. The FO has been acquiring talent, it just feels and seems like everything is not working together adequately or efficiently. And that alone is a problem.

While there are fans online that seem to want deliverance from under this reign of Bob; the franchise itself seems to not be so on high alert. For instance, the Giants decided to exercise the 2026 option for manager Bob Melvin. With Giants President of Baseball Operations Buster Posey even stating,
“Having the chance to work alongside Bob every day, we’re really fortunate to have such an experienced leader and one of the most well-respected managers in baseball. His leadership, preparation, and connection with our players have been invaluable, and we believe he’s the right person to continue guiding this team forward.”
Melvin’s sentiments seem to be in line with BP’s. Bob had mentioned,
“I’m grateful for the opportunity to continue leading this group. I believe in what we’re building here, and I appreciate the confidence that the Giants ownership group, Greg, Buster, Larry, Zack and the rest of the Giants’ organization have shown in me and our staff. We have a lot of unfinished business this year, and I’m looking forward to the work ahead.”
But all that sweet talk was back in July. Two months ago. What about now?
Well, the Giants GM Zack Minasian was recently questioned about Bob Melvin’s future. Minasian was clear that all staff and positions are constantly being looked at and evaluated to see where the organization can improve. Zack specifically reveals,
“You’re always evaluating it, even with how well you play … as well as the other departments of baseball operations,” Minasian told Brian Murphy and Markus Boucher of KNBR. “When you have years like this, it pushes you more and more to evaluate all of your departments and how they’re firing, and it makes you really question, ‘Are we good enough here, are we good enough there?’
I’m probably still at the point of evaluating myself, and what can I do differently, and how can I play my part to get us where we want to go as opposed to anybody else.
There’s always going to be conversations — whether you’re winning or losing, you’re always going to have conversations about your staffing, and how it looks. In regards to Bob, he’s a consummate professional, and he really cares about the Giants.
Beyond that, we’ll just continue to do our work. And as the season ends, we’ll evaluate the team and evaluate our system and our options going forward …”
Whether Bob Melvin remains “their guy” or not, some changes are definitely needed and most likely coming down the pipeline in San Francisco. The team is once again not in the playoffs. They are not contending for another championship; which is the ball club’s goal.
Giants May Stick With Bob Despite Failures
As a Major League manager, Melvin has garnered three Manager of the Year awards [2007 with Arizona and 2012 & 2018 with Oakland] and owns a lifetime managerial winning percentage of .515, compiling a 1,642-1,547 record during the regular season. His 1,642 regular season wins rank 21st all-time and are third-most among active managers behind Bruce Bochy (2,212) and Terry Francona (1,994).
Possessing a .500 win manager could be an issue. But, if the front office continues to add more talent and depth; the role of manager could fade into a non-factor next season. Nonetheless, the Giants have big decisions to make in order to finish bringing the franchise back to its glory days. And it will be interesting to see how they tackle their player and staffing challenges.
