Giants Blake Snell Throws a No-Hitter Against the Reds
Seriously, would we really expect anything less from a two time Cy Young winner? Of course not. In a late Friday matchup, the Giants Blake Snell throws a no-hitter against the Reds at the Great American Ballpark. Winning the game 3-0.
Snell got through all nine innings with just 114 pitches. Blake who notoriously is a second half of the season “killer” on the mound. Definitely showed tonight that this year shall be no different.
In the 9th Snell faces three batters: Santiago Espinal, Jonathan India and Elly De La Cruz. Blake gets Santiago to strike out swinging, Jonathan grounds out softly and Elly lines out to right field. Then history is made. During the 2024 season there have now been three no-hitters. Coming from the Astros’ Ronel Blanco, Padres’ Dylan Cease and now Blake Snell of the San Francisco Giants.
This achievement by Snell is a first in his already stellar career. He’s won a Cy Young in both the American League (2021) as well as the National League (2023). And now he can add a no-no to his résumé.
What’s even more interesting and intriguing about Snell’s no-hitter against Cincinnati is the longevity aspect. This is the very first time that Snell has pitched into the ninth inning. He has done in it in no other game. Beforehand the longest Blake has gone in a game is seven and two-thirds.
Moreover, for San Francisco this is an occurrence the franchise has not experienced in almost a decade. The last time a Giant tossed a no hitter was back in 2015. The pitcher? Chris Heston.
The game? On June 9, 2015, Chris Heston no-hit the New York Mets 5–0 at Citi Field, becoming the 22nd rookie pitcher since 1900 to throw a no-hitter in a major-league regular-season game. He struck out 11 and walked none; the only 3 runners to reach base were hit by a pitch. Interestingly, Snell also strikes out 11 against the Reds.

Yet, how many no-hitters are in the history books for San Francisco? Five? Ten? No, we must go higher. Blake Snell’s no-no brings the Giants’ franchise no hitter record to 18.
During the game Blake feels pretty comfortable and sure he can get through all nine innings. Snell talks to NBC Sports Bay Area after the win and says,
“In the eighth and ninth, I was pretty confident. I was like, ‘Let’s go get it, we’re not just going to waste our time here.'”
And waste time Blake did not. He makes short work of Cincinnati; getting the win for the Giants. Congratulations to Snell for adding to the MLB’s no hitter history. Snell is the 3rd pitcher since 1900 to record a 15-strikeout game and a no-hitter in consecutive starts, joining: 2015 Max Scherzer and 2018 James Paxton.
