Giannis Antetokounmpo Will Start the Season With the Milwaukee Bucks
He’s been one of the biggest names that fans have been keeping up with all summer. What will he do? Will he stay or will he go? Well, now we have an answer. Giannis Antetokounmpo will start the season with the Milwaukee Bucks.
In recent days it looked like Giannis would be staying because of news emerging in regards to his brother, Thanasis. The Bucks expressed interest in bringing him back into the Milwaukee fold. Journalist Marc Stein reports,
It has been trending this way for some time and now Thanasis Antetokounmpo has indeed secured a new one-year deal with Milwaukee … providing the summer’s loudest statement yet that Giannis Antetokounmpo is about to begin his 13th season as a Buck.
The deal is official: Thanasis Antetokounmpo moves into his sixth season as a Milwaukee Buck … with Giannis now entering No. 13.
Thanasis was originally drafted by New York with the 51st overall selection in the 2014 NBA Draft, Antetokounmpo appeared in two games for the Knicks during the 2015-16 season. He signed with Milwaukee prior to the 2019-20 season after playing three seasons (Spain, 2016-17; Greece, 2017-19) overseas. He last appeared for the Bucks during the 2023-24 season, in which he played in 34 games. During his first five seasons with the team, he appeared in 196 games (11 starts). Antetokounmpo missed the 2024-25 season due to injury.

But now he is back. And ready to do battle with Giannis. ESPN’s Shams Charania also confirmed Thanasis’ status along with Giannis beginning the season and staying with the Bucks. He states,
“Thanasis Antetokounmpo is signing a guaranteed one-year, $2.9 million deal to return to the Milwaukee Bucks, sources tell ESPN. Antetokounmpo played for Bucks from 2019-24. This also means after a summer of exploring options, Giannis is staying in Milwaukee to start the season.”
So then, what is next for Milwaukee? The Bucks are still aiming to build and remain on the hunt for backcourt help. NBA insider, Brett Siegel, says Milwaukee is looking to clear roster space after signing Thanasis Antetokounmpo and could potentially waive Andre Jackson Jr. as a result. Siegel mentions, “The Bucks were seeking two second-round picks in a trade for Jackson, but they never received an offer including more than one second-round pick… That is why Jackson is a potential player who could be waived by the Bucks after signing Antetokounmpo.”
