Giannis Antetokounmpo Refuses Bucks Plea to Shutdown Rest of Season
With the season nearing its conclusion, teams are making decisions regarding their players. For instance, the Bucks have “made it clear” to Giannis Antetokounmpo that it “would be in their shared interest” for him to be shut down for rest of the season. However, the two sides seem to be at odds and in disagreement with what should take place. Giannis Antetokounmpo is so far refusing the Bucks’ plea to shutdown for the rest of season.
The rift and uncomfortable situation is over whether Antetokounmpo should keep playing in Milwaukee’s 14 remaining games. The Bucks are currently 6 1/2 games behind the Charlotte Hornets for the final Play-In Tournament spot. While injuries have forced Antetokounmpo to miss 32 games already this season, sources tell Eric Nehm of The Athletic, that the 10x All-Star informed the team he has no desire to cut his season short. No matter how it is explained, Giannis just does not agree with Milwaukee’s idea or approach.
As of right now, Giannis really doesn’t have a choice when it comes to not being on the court. Antetokounmpo will likely miss at least 1 week due to a left knee hyperextension and bone bruise. After the week is up, Giannis will be reevaluated.
ESPN’s Shams Charania confirmed the news and reports regarding Antetokounmpo‘s refusal to shut down for the season. Charania mentioned,
“The Milwaukee Bucks want Giannis Antetokounmpo to shut down for the remainder of the season after his latest injury and the team’s playoff chances dwindled, but Antetokounmpo has refused the team’s requests and wants to play again, sources tell ESPN.
There have been multiple meetings over Antetokounmpo’s status in the last 24 hours since his hyperextended knee diagnosis, and a disagreement has ensued between the sides on whether it is best for him to return, sources said.”

Furthermore, when reached for comment, a team source noted that Antetokounmpo is still injured and not cleared to play at this time, and an update will be sent when that changes. Bucks coach Doc Rivers told reporters there is a lot of uncertainty surrounding Giannis being able to play at this point in time.
Rivers says, “The good news was it was a really good image (MRI), so there was no damage. Nothing. It was really just good news. But I don’t know the next part (about a timeline for his return).” This situation will most likely be more clear when Giannis is reevaluated in a few days.
