It’s skiing but on another level. They call it moguls and it is not for the faint of heart. Athletes ski down a steep course full of bumps, combining technical turns, jumps, aerial maneuvers, and speed. If that sounds challenging it’s because it is and if you’ve never heard of it or you’ve never watched it then you’re in for a treat. Dylan Walczyk allowed us to get a sneak peek at the moguls course for the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics.

But first here is a little background information about the sport. It originated in the 1960’s that was a time of social change and a growing desire for more freedom of expression, even in sports. From that arose new and exciting skiing techniques. The new sport was referred to as “hotdogging” because of the mix of acrobatic moves, aerials, and adrenaline. Hotdogging definitely sounds like a 60’s kind of expression, lol.

Anyway, in 1979, the International Ski Federation (FIS) recognized freestyle skiing as a sport. They introduced new rules to make it safer, and the following year, the first FIS World Cup series took place. Freestyle skiing first appeared as a demonstration sport at the Calgary 1988 Games. Moguls is part of the freestyle skiing discipline which also includes aerials, cross, half-pipe, slopestyle and big air as part of the Winter Olympics.

After dedicating 20 years to his Olympic dream, he finally represented the USA at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing, securing an impressive 16th place. Dylan’s career includes multiple World Cup appearances and two podium finishes that solidified his Olympic qualification. So thanks to Dylan for providing video of the course.

So who’s ready to become a moguls expert?! Well I won’t be trying this sport but I’m going to love watching it from the comfort of my home. Right now in the women’s event, it is Jaelin Kauf (USA). She dominated at the 2025 FIS Snowboard, Freestyle, and Freeski World Championships in Engadin’s St. Moritz. And for the men it’s Filip Gravenfors (SWE) who stole the show. Finishing ahead of moguls legend Mikael Kingsbury (CAN) in second and Nick Page (USA) in third.

Kingsbury, the most decorated moguls skier in history, is on a mission to add yet another accolade to his legendary career—his 10th World Championships gold. Of course the battle for World Championships leads to fulfilling the dream of competing at the Olympics.
