Gamecocks are SEC Regular Season Champs for the 5th Consecutive Year

You do something once, people may notice. Accomplish it twice, they know it is not a fluke. Three times or more and now it is just becoming a habitual success. After defeating Missouri, the Gamecocks are SEC Regular Season Champs for the 5th Consecutive Year. And South Carolina secures the SEC regular-season championship outright, not sharing with anybody. Which now makes 10 regular-season SEC championships for Dawn Staley and South Carolina.

So how did the Gamecocks repeat their success? What did they have going for them? Well, just about everything. Offensively and defensively they handled the ball well, working together fluidly to create opportunities and then taking full advantage of mismatches. Their efficiency and effort led to them being historically good.

South Carolina women scored 112 points Thursday evening against Missouri. The third-most points in any conference game in SEC history. Furthermore, South Carolina entered the night with an SEC-best 37% chance at winning the conference tournament per ESPN Analytics.

Moreover, over a 100 points of offense means many different teammates got to eat. Several South Carolina players had standout performances against Missouri. Players such as:

Madina Okot:
26 PTS, 17 REB (!!!), 13/18 FG

Joyce Edwards:
23 PTS, 4 REB, 10/15 FG

Ta’Niya Latson:
17 PTS, 7 AST, 5 REB, 2 STLS

Additionally, Raven Johnson, of course, stood out on the court. The 2026 Naismith Women’s College Defensive Player of the Year made sure her presence was felt. In her final regular-season game at CLA she put up:

16 PTS
5 RBS
5 AST (0 TOs)
6-9 FG
4-6 3P

Raven Johnson’s fourth 3-pointer in an SEC game was a new career-high for the point guard. Overall it was a cold shooting night for the Gamecocks behind the arc. But in the paint, the team was extremely effective, putting up over 40 points from this range.

However, South Carolina women’s basketball being a well-oiled scoring machine is not surprising. Especially, being under the reins of the legendary Dawn Staley.

Winning is just in Staley’s blood it seems. Her approach seems to time after time, pull out the best in her players. Which has led to Dawn being in discussions involving the best coaches of college hoops.

South Carolina’s big win comes on the heels of Staley reaching a major accomplishment. Dawn Staley reached her 500th win with the Gamecocks. Thus, joining names like Pat Summitt and Geno Auriemma for this milestone. You know… not bad company to be found among.
