Gabby Thomas Wins Gold in 200m Making History with Teammate Brittany Brown
Harvard graduate with a degree in neurobiology and global health? Check. University of Texas grad with a masters in public health/sleep epidemiology? Double check. A 2024 Olympian with gold medal bragging rights? You already know! On Tuesday, Gabby Thomas won the gold in the 200m making history with her teammate, Brittany Brown.
In the qualifying heats Thomas looked like a force to be reckoned with; however, she would be challenged. Gabby’s biggest competition on the track was hands down, Saint Lucien runner, Julien Alfred. Alfred is fast as lightening. And the whole world got to see it just a day or so ago.
Alfred competed in the 100m race, facing off against American Sha’Carri Richardson. Julien absolutely annihilated the rest of the field. Everyone else was literally running for second and third.
Alfred won the 100 yard dash event with a time of 10.72, setting a Saint Lucian national record. And winning the tiny island of Saint Lucia its first-ever Olympic medal. Additionally, with the spoils of the 100m gold medal comes one other coveted accolade. The prestigious title of “fastest woman in the world.” Julien finished ahead of Richardson and bronze-medalist Melissa Jefferson, both Americans who had times of 10.87 and 10.92.

So then, how would Thomas fare against the speed of Saint Lucia’s new legend? Absolutely no problem. Gabby was ridiculous on the track! No need for a photo finish because Thomas was clearly in control sprinting her way to the finish in 21.83. Thus, beating Julien Alfred of Saint Lucia (22.08) and Team USA’s Brittany Brown (22.20)
Now remember at the outset we mentioned that Thomas and Brown made history? Well it involves the medal count in this event. The United States and Jamaica have been in a heated battle for years in track and field. However, Brittany and Gabby helped end a major tie between the two elite running countries. CBS Sports Travis Miller explains,
“Thanks to Gabby Thomas and Brittany Brown, Team USA now has the most all-time women’s 200m Olympic medals (15) breaking the tie with Jamaica (13). Also the third time two U.S. women are on the Olympic 200m podium.”
Nice. Congratulations to Thomas and Brown. It’s alway great to witness greatness in action.
