Free Agent Alex Len Signs With the Los Angeles Lakers

LA basketball has taken us all on a ride. It has been a roller coaster watching the team transform over the course of a couple weeks. It kicked off with the massive trade for Luka Doncic; a rescinded traded that brought Dalton Konecht back home; and now the purple gold has moved on to make another move. The front office continues to attempt their cooking ways, and on Tuesday afternoon it was revealed that free agent Alex Len officially signs with the Los Angeles Lakers; providing the franchise with a new option after Mark Williams fell through.

ESPN’s NBA insider Shams Charania confirmed the news briefly stating:

“Free agent 7-footer Alex Len will sign with the Los Angeles Lakers, agent Mike Lelchitski tells ESPN. Len intended to sign with the Pacers but has decided to land in LA after the Lakers rescinded the Mark Williams trade and created new opportunity.”

Nonetheless, some fans are probably wondering what benefits does Woods bring to the team? Why did the FO go in this direction and what are some of the other roster implications? Well, Lakers beat reporter Trevor Lane mentions:

“Alex Len gives the Lakers a big body at the Center position, a different look from what Jaxson Hayes and Christian Wood provide. They will need to waive someone to make room on their roster. KEY to watch for: How much does Len get? If it’s just a prorated vet min, LA can make another move (like promoting a 2-way player) and stay under the hard cap at the 2nd tier apron.”

Interesting. Furthermore, in their official press release, the Lakers organization go on to reveal and elaborate more on what Lane mentioned just minutes prior. Basically, who’s getting waived and what are Lens stats and career “resume” looking like. The Lakers divulge,

“The Los Angeles Lakers have signed center Alex Len. In a related move, the team waived forward/center Christian Wood.

Len (7’0″, 250) most recently suited up for the Sacramento Kings this season, appearing in 36 games (three starts) and averaging 1.4 points and 1.8 rebounds in 7.2 minutes. The 31-year-old has seen action in 680 career NBA games (240 starts) across 12 seasons with Sacramento (2021-25, 2019-20), Washington (2020-21), Toronto (2020-21), Atlanta (2018-20) and Phoenix (2013-18), averaging 6.7 points and 5.3 rebounds in 17.1 minutes. Len has scored in double figures 198 times throughout his career and has grabbed double-digit rebounds in 105 outings.

The Ukraine native played two collegiate seasons at the University of Maryland (2011-13). As a sophomore, Len appeared in 38 games (37 starts) and averaged 11.9 points, 7.8 rebounds, 1.0 assists and 2.1 blocks in 26.4 minutes.

Wood originally signed with the Lakers Sept. 6, 2023, and appeared in 50 regular season games (one start) during the 2023-24 season, averaging 6.9 points, 5.1 rebounds and 1.0 assists in 17.4 minutes.”

Moreover, Alex Len, the No 5 overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft is a true 7-footer with strength and touch. And he should pair nicely with current members of LA’s roster. Len will now have two of the best playmakers in NBA history, Luka Doncic and LeBron James, to set him up. But still, we shall see how things play out. But “A” plus to the Lakers for working hard to strengthen the team for the final push of the season.
