Some things you just can’t make up even if you tried. If you were Marty McFly and you hopped into the Deloreon and went back to the 80’s then back to now. You could experience the same play, in the same stadium, by the same team in the same situation. Wild. But it is the truth… Freddie Freeman and Kirk Gibson walk it off in Game 1 of the World Series 36 Years apart.

Did you witness the magic of Kirk Gibson in 1988? Well, if you did, watching Freeman and the Dodgers tonight probably served you up some serious deja vu. Both of these gentlemen have now secured the first win of the world series for the men in blue by blasting a ball into oblivion; and into the stands filled of screaming Los Angeles fans.

But there’s two interesting fun facts to hang on from tonight. As Sarah Langs points out:

Walk-off HR while trailing, WS history: 2024 Freddie Freeman, 1993 Joe Carter, and 1988 Kirk Gibson.

That is not a long list. Neither is the one MLB reporter Paul Casella mentioned,

Walk-off HR with team down to final out in a World Series game: 2024: Freddie Freeman, Dodgers (Game 1); and 1988: Kirk Gibson, Dodgers (Game 1). That’s it. That’s the list.

So then, what we all saw tonight is rare. Another piece of baseball lore to be enjoyed and discussed as the days go by. Nevertheless, of course some fans will wonder… could this be a sign of the near future?

Well, who won the 1988 World Series? The Dodgers. So then, Los Angeles has the chance to do the funniest thing, win this time around too. BUT, it will be a challenge.

The Yankees led multiple times in game one; without seeing much action out of Aaron Judge. And without a costly fielding error you might be looking at a much different ending. So this World Series will definitely be a thrilling battle. Both sides will HAVE to give everything to win.

Nevertheless, one last fun fact about Kirk Gibson before we let you sleep or go discuss the game on social media. Did you know Kirk only had one at bat in the 1988 World Series and it was when he hit the game-winning home run? It’s true.

Gibson was a surprise pinch hitter that night since he had unfortunately injured both of his legs during the NLCS. Interestingly, like Gibson, Freeman is also suffering from a painful leg injury, in his case a badly sprained ankle. As we said, you just can’t make this up.
