Former WR Jacoby Jones Has Died At Age 40
This week has taken a heavy toll on the sports, entertainment and fitness industries. Actress Shelly Duvall, football coach Monte Kiffin, and fitness guru Richard Simmons all passed away. And now sadly we have to add another name to that list. Former Ravens WR Jacoby Jones has died at age 40. The NFLPA released a statement in behalf of the Jones family:
“His light, energy & presence will be so missed. We’re thinking of Jacoby’s family and Little Jacoby at this time. The family, including his mother, Emily and his son, Little Jacoby, are together and are asking for prayers, privacy, and support as they navigate through this difficult time.”
Everyone who knew Jones was touched by his happy demeanor and caring personality. Jones played for the Baltimore Ravens for three seasons but was originally drafted by the Houston Texans in the 2007 NFL Draft. He also spent time with the Pittsburgh Steelers and then retired from the then San Diego Chargers in 2015. However, it was his time in Baltimore that really stood out in his career.
He’s known for the “Mile High Miracle” which happened in the AFC divisional playoff game in January 2013. QB Joe Flacco threw a 70-yard touchdown pass to Jones with 31 seconds left on the clock tying the game. The Ravens went on to win that game in double-overtime.
Jones was also instrumental in helping the Ravens win Super Bowl XLVII against the San Francisco 49ers. He became the first player to score a receiving touchdown and a return touchdown in the same game in Super Bowl history. His 108-yard kickoff return touchdown to open the second half is the longest scoring play in the history of the Super Bowl.

Ravens head coach John Harbaugh issued his own touching statement about Jones:
“I loved Jacoby Jones,” Ravens coach John Harbaugh said in a statement. “We all did. His spirit, enthusiasm and love for people were powerful. He was a light. He was the cherished son of his loving mom, Ms. Emily. They were so close. He was a man of faith. My favorite football play was when Jacoby was talking to his mom in the end zone, just before a late-game kickoff return against the Vikings in a snowstorm shootout. Jacoby then raced to catch the ball and run it back for a touchdown. My favorite Jacoby personal moment was every time I saw his smiling face full of Joy. Rest in peace, Jacoby, in the arms of Jesus.”
The death of Jacoby Jones is yet another heartbreaking loss for us all. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones at such a difficult time.
