Former Olympian Lindsey Vonn Is Coming Out Of Retirement

The highly decorated alpine skier has been out of commission for five years. But after successful knee surgery, 40-year old Lindsey Vonn is coming out of retirement. Vonn started skiing at an early age and quickly mastered the sport. She made her Olympic debut at the 2002 Salt Lake games at the tender age of 17. She raced in both the slalom and combined events. Her best result was sixth place in the combined. In January 2004, she made her way onto the World Cup podium with a third-place finish in downhill. The very next year she competed in four races at her first World Championships held in Bormio, Italy, pulling in fourth-place finishes in both the downhill and the combined.

Vonn went on to win three Olympic medals, 20 World Cup titles (including four overall Crystal Globes), eight World Championship medals, 137 World Cup podiums and 82 World Cup victories. But like so many athletes she suffered multiple injuries during her career. However, Vonn was a fighter and continued to persevere and come back from those injuries. But ultimately it was the injuries that derailed her causing her retirement after 18 seasons on the World Cup tour.

But since then she has had a partial knee replacement surgery in April and she feels stronger than ever. Vonn has been able to get back to training and test her knee over the past couple of months and will be continuing her progression with the Stifel U.S. Ski Team in Colorado and beyond. Regarding her return, Vonn said:

“Getting back to skiing without pain has been an incredible journey,” said Vonn. “I am looking forward to being back with the Stifel U.S. Ski Team and to continue to share my knowledge of the sport with these incredible women.”

The Stifel U.S. Ski Team is very happy to welcome Vonn back to the fold:

“Lindsey has made an indelible mark on alpine skiing and our organization throughout her career. We’re delighted to welcome her back,” said President and CEO of U.S. Ski & Snowboard Sophie Goldschmidt. “Her dedication and passion towards alpine skiing is inspiring and we’re excited to have her back on snow and see where she can go from here.”

In addition to skiing, Vonn has her own foundation, the Lindsey Vonn Foundation. Which supports underserved girls through scholarships and empowerment programs. With her return Vonn hopes to continue to inspire the next generation of women in sports. Congratulations Lindsey, see you on the slopes!
