Former Ole Miss Head Coach Lane Kiffin Leaving For LSU Opportunity

At this time of year a college head coach decides to make a big change. And he’s doing it just three weeks before the start of the College Football Playoff (CFP). Although we can’t be completely surprised by the move since there had been rampant speculation about what he would do. Well all the theories can now be laid to rest. It’s been announced that former Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin is leaving for an LSU opportunity.

What’s equally sad and amazing about Kiffin is that he had led the Ole Miss Rebels to their first CFP berth. During a team meeting two days later, Ole Miss officials told the players that Kiffin was leaving for the LSU position. And they discovered that defensive coordinator Pete Golding would be named the permanent head coach. Naturally, it was the players’ wish to have Kiffin coach them through the playoffs, particularly since he got them there. After the school’s first 11 win season in history.

Commenting on the situation, Kiffin took to social media to express his own thoughts about the situation:

“After a lot of prayer and time spent with family, I made the difficult decision to accept the head coaching position at LSU. I was hoping to complete a historic six season run with this year’s team by leading Ole Miss through the playoffs, capitalizing on the team’s incredible success and their commitment to finish strong, and investing everything into a playoff run with guardrails in place to protect the program in any areas of concern.

“My request to do so was denied by Keith Carter despite the team also asking him to allow me to keep coaching them so they could better maintain their high level of performance. Unfortunately, that means Friday’s Egg Bowl was my last game coaching the Rebels.”

Kiffin had spent six years at Ole Miss building it into the successful program it became. But unfortunately there was nowhere left for Kiffin to go or to do. He couldn’t have possibly turned down the LSU offer. Going to a rival school at such a time will certainly be a challenge for Kiffen. Needless to say he will need to win early and often in his new head coaching position. Which is why he likely ended his statement in this way:

“While I am looking forward to a new start with a unique opportunity at LSU, I will forever cherish the incredible six years I spent at Ole Miss and will be rooting hard for the team to complete their mission and bring a championship to Oxford.”

So we’re left to wonder how will the Rebels fair in the playoffs without Kiffin? Find out when the 2025-2026 CFB first round starts Friday, December 19, and Saturday, December 20, 2025.
