Former NFL Star Vontae Davis Found Dead at 35 In His Home
This is never the kind of news you wish to come across. Life is so precious, and can be so fleeting; and now the sports world finds itself in mourning once again. With extremely heavy hearts, we report that 2 time Pro Bowl cornerback, and former NFL star Vontae Davis was found dead at 35 inside his home in Miami.
Yahoo! Sports confirmed the news about Davis’ shocking passing. They state,
“Vontae Davis, former NFL cornerback for the Miami Dolphins, Indianapolis Colts, and Buffalo Bills, has died, NFL Media confirmed. He was 35, just two months short of his 36th birthday.
The cause and circumstances of his death are unknown. According to the Davie, Florida police department, Davis was found dead in his home on Monday morning after being discovered by the house assistant. A death investigation is currently underway, though investigators have said they don’t expect foul play.”
The NFL also put out of a quick statement online saying,
“The NFL is heartbroken to hear about the passing of Vontae Davis. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones.”
Moreover, Jim Irsay, the owner of the Colts immediately took to social media as reports and news of Vontae began spreading like wildfire. Regarding Davis, who played for his organization for 5 years (2012-2017); Jim states,
“Extremely saddened to hear of the passing of Vontae Davis. A great guy, teammate, player. My prayers to Vontae’s family.”
We concur with Irsay… Vontae Davis was a great guy, who excelled in school and on the field. In college he was named to the All-America first teams… twice; and in the NFL Draft he was selected during the first round by the Dolphins in 2009. He cared about people and wanted to be there for youths trying to find their way. Davis had also published a children’s book apart of the series entitled “Middle School Rules” in which professional athletes give advice and share guidance on things they wish they knew growing up.

Nevertheless, Vontae Davis, is also famous for the manner he retired from the NFL. Doing so right in the middle of a game; the Bills’ second game of the 2018 season, at halftime. He made a statement about the situation at the time that read:
“Today on the field, reality hit me fast and hard: I shouldn’t be out there anymore. It’s more important for me and my family to walk away healthy than to willfully embrace the warrior mentality and limp away too late.”
Davis made a mature decision for himself and his loved ones back in 2018. While some made jokes about it; in hindsight many will now acknowledge that you just never know what someone is going through; and we’re glad he tried everything to be happy and healthy.
Vontae is the brother of college football and NFL player, Vernon Davis. Upon retirement, Vontae found it initially difficult to associate himself with professional football; but eventually began watching games on TV and going to his brother’s matchups.

Nonetheless, Vontae also set out to help others by opening a spa. ESPN’s Brendan Meyer reported on Davis and his new venture in 2019. Meyer mentions,
“Davis reads a business book on his Kindle. Today’s chapter is about CEOs — how whenever possible, they shy away from the spotlight. It’s of particular interest to Davis, who is now CEO of a soon-to-open holistic wellness spa in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Davis is truly happy. He loves how great his body feels. He loves that soon he’ll be his own boss and that he’s creating a space to help others heal.”
Vontae sustained many painful injuries during his career; including needing surgery to repair groin tears. However, Davis never regretted his choice to leave mid game. He told ESPN,
“And looking back, it’s one of the best decisions I’ve made in my life, honestly. Because I did something that I knew was the best thing for me.”
A tough decision no doubt; but one that was necessary. What athletes go through is not easy. Yes, they get paid millions; but the mental and physical toll can far outweigh anything monetarily received. Nevertheless, our thoughts are with the Davis family during this very difficult time and we hope they receive all the love, help and support that they need.
