Former NFL Head Coach Bill Belichick Failed To Become A First Ballot Hall of Famer

Whether you love him or hate him, his credentials are undeniable. Other players and coaches feared his football prowess. Fans of football either were happy to have him on their team or angry that they didn’t have him. He even served as the general manager in addition to being the head coach. Therefore, it was shocking to find out that former NFL head coach Bill Belichick failed to become a first ballot Hall of Famer. Who didn’t really believe that he would be nominated and inducted on his first go-round? Certainly not us and not a lot of other journalists, players or fans.

Senior writer for ESPN.com, Seth Wickersham stated that Bill Belichick  is not a first-ballot Hall of Famer. He fell short of the 40 out of 50 votes needed for induction to the Pro Football Hall of Fame during his first year of eligibility. Belichick received a call from a Hall representative last Friday afternoon with the news that he won’t be inducted into the Hall in Canton, Ohio, this summer. Whether that is standard procedure to make a call like that is unknown. But the point is that he was expected to get in on the first try but that’s not happening.

Belichick is an 8-time Super Bowl winning coach and NFL Researcher posted his rankings as a head coach.

Bill Belichick (head coach ranks per @pfref)…

  • 6 Super Bowls (1st)
  • 9 conference championships (1st)
  • 31 playoff wins (1st)
  • 302 regular season wins (3rd)
  • 333 total wins (2nd)

This is not even including his 2 Super Bowls as #NYGiants DC.

So with accolades like that, why wasn’t it enough for Belichick to be a 1st ballot Hall of Famer?

Some say it’s politics, that some of the voting journalists have hurt feelings. Belichick wasn’t known to say much in his press conferences when he coached in the NFL. Many people didn’t like his gruff exterior. At one point, former ESPN host Tom Jackson claimed the New England players hated their coach. But that turned out to be untrue.

Some label him as a cheater, referring to the spygate and deflategate dramas. Spygate came about when commissioner Goodell changed where taping could be done at games, without going through the rules committee. It cost the Patriots fines and picks. Deflategate turned into a science experiment regarding the air pressure in footballs. The Patriots (specifically Tom Brady) were accused of removing air from the footballs. But physics showed that cold air affects the loss of air pressure. Nevertheless, both instances were talked about ad nauseum and casted the Patriots in a negative light.

Bill Belichick Not Headed to the Pro Football Hall of Fame Yet

Then there is him letting Tom Brady go after the 2019 season. He went to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and won another Super Bowl with them. Belichick had three out of four losing seasons after Brady’s departure and was fired. But besides his decline in his remaining seasons with the Patriots, people took issue with his much younger girlfriend. He hooked up with Jordan Hudson who is now 24 and he is 73. People are convinced he’s not serious about football because he’s too busy having fun with her.

Whatever the case may be none of those excuses are good enough to leave him off the first round ballot. The body of work is what matters when determining who is eligible for the Hall of Fame. Personal feelings have to be left at the door.
